Disneyland secrets: amazing Disney secrets/Disney World secrets

disney secrets, disney tivia, disneyland triviaHow many Disney secrets do you know? Have you heard about some of Disneyland's secrets from friends who have visited the world-famous theme park? Or how about Disney World secrets? The world of Disney has fascinated billions of people around the world ever since Mickey Mouse came out and more so when Disneyland was opened to the public in the 50s. Since then, adults and children alike have marveled at the rides and many attractions of the park and its many siblings around the world. But did you know that there are Disney secrets hidden in the theme parks? Here are some of those secrets and little-known facts as gathered from various internet sources.

From Neatorama, here are a few facts as divulged by someone who works at Disneyland:

The drawbridge to Sleeping Beauty’s Castle really works. It’s been raised only twice: once on opening day, and once in the l980s when Fantasyland reopened.

The crest above the drawbridge is the Disney family crest.

It took only 364 days to build Disneyland.

Main Street represents Walt’s home town, Marceline, Missouri, in 1901, the year he was born.

The organ that was in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea now lives in the ballroom of the Haunted Mansion.

In the early years of the park, the Rivers of America were stocked with catfish and visitors were allowed to fish off the docks of Tom Sawyer Island.

When Disneyland launched its original Submarine Voyage ride, it included Weeki Wachee-type mermaids swimming among the submarines.

According to Disney records, the concept of Disneyland began when Walt Disney accompanied his two daughters to Griffith Park one Sunday. While the kids were on the Griffith Park Merry-Go-Round, Walt Disney came up with the idea of building a place where adults and their children could go and have fun together. Although this idea lay dormant for many years, Walt Disney never abandoned it. His plan to build a theme park was strengthened by the experience of his father who helped build the grounds of the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago. One can see the resemblance of a "Land" filled with "rides" and a fair grounds with differently themed areas to the Disneyland created sixty years later. Other Disney secrets and trivia are the following:
  • Disneyland was expected to fail as opening day was a disaster. The opening day temperature was 101 degrees which led the shoes sticking on the asphalt pavement as the visitors walked its grounds. Moreover, by the end of the day, more than half of the rides had broken down. This led to predictions that Disneyland wouldn't last a year.
  • Looking for alcoholic beverages in Disneyland? There is only one place to get it, and it's a very exclusive place. Club 33 is a very exclusive place that there is a ten year waiting list and admission is one thousand dollars!
  • Since the park's opening in July 1955, there have been numerous accidents, injuries, and deaths at the park. As of December 2006, 13 guests and 1 Cast Member have died inside the park, while over 100 guests have been injured.

Michael Phelps suspended: Phelps suspended by USA Swimming

USA swimming officials have suspended Michael Phelps. No one was surprised, as the suspension of Michael Phelps is all but expected following the publication of a picture of the Olympic champion using a bong (a device used to smoke marijuana) last week. The suspension takes effect immediately and will last for three months, banning him from competition and temporarily snuffing his preparations for the world championships later in the year. As a result, he won’t be able to compete until early May, which would give him a little more than two months for some racing before July’s world championships in Rome. But that's not all, as part of the suspension, the sport’s national

governing body also cut off its financial support to Michael Phelps for the same three-month period, effective immediately. USA Swimming provides a monthly stipend of $1,750.00 to national team members for travel and training expenditures, plus performance bonuses. However, it’s a small percentage of the millions Phelps makes through endorsements.

But those endorsements may be in peril as well. Though some of his sponsors have stated earlier that they will continue to support Michael Phelps (Speedo is one of them), cereal and snack maker Kellogg announced it wouldn’t renew its sponsorship contract with Michael Phelps, pointing to the marijuana controversy as the cause. They stated that his behavior is “not consistent with the image of Kellogg.” The swimmer appeared on the company’s cereal boxes after his Olympic triumph.

This was also part of the reason by USA Swimming suspended Michael Phelps. “This is not a situation where any anti-doping rule was violated, but we decided to send a strong message to Michael because he disappointed so many people, particularly the hundreds of thousands of USA Swimming member kids who look up to him as a role model and a hero,” the governing body of swimming said in a statement.

In early 2009, Phelps admitted to "behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment" following the publication of a photo in a British tabloid that showed him using a bong, a device used for smoking marijuana. As a result of his actions, the Richland County Sheriff's Department announced they were investigating to determine if Phelps could be charged with a crime, USA Swimming suspended Phelps from swimming competitively for three months, and Kellogg's announced that they would not renew his endorsement contract.

While the fallout from the Michael Phelps marijuana photo continues, friends and family likewise continued their support for the Olympic champion. Several teammates have expressed support for Michael Phelps, stating that he is just human and is prone to mistakes and occasional bad judgment like the rest of us. They are united in the hope that this controversy will teach the 14-gold medal winner a lesson and that this will spur him to do better, both in life and in the sport.

Etta James disses Beyonce for 'At Last' / Etta James vs Beyonce

etta james beyonce, etta james disses beyonce, eda james, edda jamesEtta James has dissed Beyonce for the latter's version of her song 'At Last' during the inaugural ball a few weeks ago. According to reports, the 71 year old singer went on stage in Seattle last week and told the crowd that she is going to beat the crap out of Beyonce Knowles for "singing my song" during the Obama Presidential Inaugural Ball in Washington two weeks ago. She was even quoted as saying, "Your President, the one with the big ears ... he had that woman singing my song. She gone get her ass whipped." The feisty singer then added, The great Beyoncé ... I can't stand Beyoncé." And this was

all caught on tape! (Photo from the movie "Cadillac Records")

The funny thing is, Etta James was singing a different tune a few months ago, showering Beyonce Knowles with praises for the latter's portrayal of her in the movie "Cadillac Records". Not only that. According to TMZ, "not only did the 71-year-old not write the song, she wasn't even the first -- or second -- to record it!" The song "At Last" was first recorded by Glenn Miller in 1941 followed by a version of the great Nat King Cole in 1957. Reportedly, Glenn Miller's version even ranks higher that the Etta James version in the Billboard Pop Singles chart.

So what's this "my song" Etta James is yapping about? Well, if you ask me, it all boils down to envy. Beyonce Knowles got a lot of mileage with "At Last", especially when she sang it for the First Couple during the inaugural ball, and poor old Etta James is jealous. She should have been asked to sing it, she thinks.

No comment has come out of the Beyonce camp yet.

Beyonce, "At Last" (Etta James cover)

For a backgrounder on the song "At Last", here is a portion of the entry on Wikipedia:

"At Last" is a 1941 song written by Mack Gordon and Harry Warren for the musical film Orchestra Wives, starring George Montgomery and Ann Rutherford. It was first performed in the film and on record by Glenn Miller and his orchestra, vocal by Ray Eberle and Pat Friday. The song was a major hit for Miller, reaching number 14 on the Billboard pop charts in 1942, and it soon became a standard. Nat King Cole recorded it in 1957 on his number one album Love Is the Thing. In 1960, it was covered by blues singer Etta James in a performance that improvised on Warren's melody. James was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999 for her rendition of the song.

The song became James's signature song and was the third in a string of successful songs from her Chess Records debut album At Last!. Upon the song's release in April 1961, it became her second number 2 R&B hit and crossed over to pop radio, reaching number 47 on the Billboard Hot 100. Despite its rather low pop chart standing, the song is well-known and is still played regularly on oldies radio stations.

In the decades since its release it has been covered by a number of artists, including Ella Fitzgerald, Jason Mraz, Phoebe Snow, Miles Davis, Martina McBride, Céline Dion, Lou Rawls, Eva Cassidy, Christina Aguilera, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks, Norah Jones, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Jimmy Scott, The Manhattan Rhythm Kings, Cyndi Lauper, Aubrey O'Day, Beyonce Knowles, and Nikki Yanofsky. The Etta James version is perhaps the most famous, and is known to be performed at weddings and wedding receptions because of its romantic lyrics and sweeping orchestration. It was used in the trailer for Wall-E movie.
