and racial backgrounds. As one of Variety's "10 Comics to Watch" he's been hailed as a "comic for the people" - just don't make him angry.
Yup, you read it right. Jo Koy is Pinoy, a Filipino-American that is. And for sure, he injects a lot of Filipino humor into his acts. Not just jokes and antics but traces of Pinoy culture that are truly hilarious. No doubt his Filipino mother has a lot to do with this as Pinoy moms have certain idiosyncrasies that are funny. Remember Happy Slip and Rex Navarette and their hilarious spiels on being Pinoy in America? I'm sure Jo Koy has more to add to this.
Jo Koy (real name: Joseph Glenn Herbert) started in stand up comedy more than fourteen years ago in 1994 at a comedy club in Las Vegas. He was soon making a name for himself in the Sin City as one of the most requested comedians at MGM Grand Hotel and Casino's signature show, Catch a Rising Star. A talent coordinator from Los Angeles then spotted Koy and landed him his first television appearance on BET's Comic View. Since then, Jo Koy has appeared in two seasons of Showtime at the Apollo and Comic View. He is currently touring the college circuit as a featured comedian and performs in various comedy clubs across the country.
Jo Koy on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno
In 2005, Jo Koy received his highest honor after his performance on Jay Leno's Tonight Show. That night, Koy became one of only a select few ever to receive a standing ovation in the history of the show. Jo Koy has also just completed a sold-out tour in Australia. At a recent gig in Brisbane, Jo Koy revealed that he had accepted an offer to do a Comedy Hour on Comedy Central and would soon begin filming "The Jo Koy Show". Koy has opened for headlining acts of Dave Chappelle, Mike Epps, Carlos Mencia, and Snoop Dogg. American troops in Japan and Korea witnessed Koy's energetic and physical style of comedy during a recent USO tour.Born in Tacoma, Washington, Jo Koy has been performing and entertaining audiences since he was young child. Koy credits his Filipino mother for his comedic and acting talents. From an early age, his Pinay mom encouraged him and his sister (a singer in Las Vegas ) to take part in school talent shows and impromptu performances in front of family and friends - something all Pinay mothers do. I am also a victim of such upbringing. He he.
