The Pakistani media had to face embarrasment on Friday, 10th December 2010 and had to offer apologies to the public after it published false stories about India based on fake WikiLeaks reports.
The Pakistani media on Thursday, 9th December 2010 carried reports about India’s ‘anti-Pakistan activities’ in the country’s tribal areas and Afghanistan.
The Guardian which first published the WikiLeaks cables have now proved that the reports in Pakistani dailies are not accurate. Guardian did it own searches and here’s what it published after that:
An extensive search of the WikiLeaks database by the Guardian by date, name and keyword failed to locate any of the incendiary allegations. It suggests this is the first case of WikiLeaks being exploited for propaganda purposes. The controversial claims, published in four Pakistani national papers, were credited to the Online Agency, an Islamabad-based news service that has frequently run pro-army stories in the past. One of the leading Pakistani News paper on Thursday had quoted the US ambassador in India as saying that ‘India was ready for war with Pakistan in 2004'. and that ‘India was also carrying out anti-Pakistan activities in the country’s tribal region bordering Afghanistan,’
The News and Express Tribune dailies carried retractions on Friday, while the TV channels ran stories to offer apologies to the general public.
