Kathy Griffin LIVE on CNN shooting her mouth off on New Year's Eve - that should be the tittle of this entry but is too long. Anyway, I actually saw this as it happened during the CNN countdown broadcast from Times Square and thought it was funny. It's the typical Kathy Griffin we saw and not the "telepromptered" Kathy Griffin CNN wanted to show us. I was actually wondering why CNN hired her for its New Year's Eve broadcast when I first opened the TV knowing her reputation on live television (remember her Emmy speech two years ago?). But then, it was New Year's Eve and CNN must have thought they could tame her for just a couple of hours. Wrong! Well, almost. Her"controversial" slip happened just a few minutes before she and co-host Anderson Copper were to wrap up their gig.
Just before a commercial break, Kathy Griffin mentioned a possible 'Bad Girls Club' reunion show. "I've been asked to host the reunion for 'Bad Girls Club'," said Kathy, to which Anderson asked, "Didn't Star Jones do that already?". Anderson Cooper then went on to tease Kathy about the gig until Griffin admitted that Star Jones wasn't available so the job landed on her lap. Apparently, it was not only Anderson who was teasing her as she continued to talk to some people off-cam. Some in the audience were even heckling her, it appeared.
"What? That's a big gig for me!." She then turned to a person in the crowd, "What are you laughing at? You're outside in the freezing cold for the 12th hour? Stop it! Why is everyone out here mocking me?" It was right after this that Kathy Griffin's controversial remark was heard. Just as Anderson Cooper was cutting to a commercial break, someone in the crowd shouted at Kathy to which she she replied, "Shut up! You know what, screw you. I'm working. Why don't you get a job, buddy?," screamed Kathy. "You know what, I don't go to your job and knock the d-cks out of your mouth."
The shot had already faded during the LIVE coverage but the audio was still loud and clear - all across the globe! That may be the last time we'll see her host a LIVE broadcast at CNN. He he. Or maybe she still can, but someone should be ready with the bleeper!
