Band Baaja Barat a must watch movie

Band Baaja Barat, the latest film from Yashraj has been getting superb reviews from each and every corner. Most of the prominent critics says that Band Baaja Baaraat is a must watch movie. Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh are the lead pair in this romantic comedy.

Band Baaja Barat
Maneesh Sharma directed this film based on wedding planning. Yashraj has gone for a simple film sans all star-glitz and their effort has been paid off. Band Baaja Barat had a low profile release with pretty low or no expectations. That has played major role in this film to get the positive feedback.

Not many expected this film to be as good as it turned out to be. With the star cast and title, Band Baaja Barat looked weak and hopeless prior to release.

Cong played religious politics post 26/11

Post 26/11, a section of the Congress leadership was seen playing religious politics after one of its leaders, A R Antulay, implied that Hindutva forces may have been involved in the Mumbai terror attacks, according to a confidential memo by the then US ambassador to India, David Mulford, released by WikiLeaks.
"The Congress Party, after first distancing itself from the comments (of Antulay, the then minority affairs minister), two days later issued a contradictory statement which implicitly endorsed the conspiracy. During this time, Antulay's completely unsubstantiated claims gained support in ... Indian-Muslim community," Mulford wrote in his secret cable to the State Department on December 23, 2008.
"Hoping to foster that support for upcoming national elections, the Congress Party cynically pulled back from its original dismissal and lent credence to the conspiracy," Mulford wrote.
Regardless of Home Minister P Chidambaram's dismissal of Antulay's comments, the Indian-Muslim community "will continue to believe they are unfairly targeted by law enforcement and that those who investigate the truth are silenced," he said in the cable.
"The entire episode demonstrates that the Congress Party will readily stoop to the old caste/religious-based politics if it feels it is in its interest," Mulford alleged, according to the cable posted by WikiLeaks on its website yesterday.
The United States has neither confirmed or denied the authenticity of these cables, but said that some 250,000 papers have been stolen from its system and demanded that WikiLeaks -- the whistle blower website -- return them back to the State Department.
Outrageous comments
According to WikiLeaks, there are some 1,300 cables from the US embassy in New Delhi. However, only half a dozen of them have been posted by it on its website.
Mulford said while the killing of three high-level law enforcement officers during the Mumbai attacks, including ATS chief Hemant Karkare, "is a remarkable coincidence, the Congress Party's initial reaction to Antulay's outrageous comments was correct."
"But as support seemed to swell among Muslims for Antulay's unsubstantiated claims, crass political opportunism swayed the thinking of some Congress Party leaders," he wrote.

"What's more, the (Congress) party made the cynical political calculation to lend credence to the conspiracy even after its recent emboldening state elections victories. The party chose to pander to Muslims' fears, providing impetus for those in the Muslim community who will continue to play up the conspiracy theory," Mulford wrote in his cable.
While "cooler heads" eventually prevailed within the Congress leadership, the idea that the party would entertain "such outlandish claims proved once again that many party leaders are still wedded to the old identity politics," he said.
The 79-year-old Antulay "was probably bewildered to find that his remarks, similar in vein to what he would have routinely made in the past to attack the BJP, created such afuror this time," Mulford said.
The cable noted that Antulay "sparked a political controversy on December 17 with comments insinuating that the killing of Maharashtra Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) Chief Hemant Karkare by the Mumbai terrorists was somehow linked to Karkare's investigation of (Malegaon) bombings in which radical Hindus are suspected."

Brittany Smith:Girl safe, suspect in mother’s killing found in San Francisco

1206_amberalert

The Roanoke Times is reporting that a desperate, weeklong hunt for 12-year-old Brittany Smith and her accused abductor ended Friday night when a retail store clerk recognized them shopping in San Francisco and police there seized them without a fight.

Brittany wasn’t physically hurt and was being interviewed by San Francisco police, said Roanoke County police Chief Ray Lavinder. Her slain mother’s live-in boyfriend, Jeffrey Easley, 32, was charged on a Roanoke County arrest warrant with abduction. Roanoke County authorities will swiftly move to extradite him back to Virginia, Lavinder said.

A nationwide, seven-day hunt for Brittany and Easley yielded more than 700 tips, but no confirmed sightings since their trip to the Salem Walmart last Friday for camping gear purchased with a credit card stolen from Tina Smith, Brittany’s mom, Lavinder said.

Tina Smith, 41, a nurse at a Richfield Retirement Community in Salem, was found dead in her home on Monday. Brittany was gone, abducted by Easley, police said. With a nationwide Amber Alert, canceled Friday night, law enforcers and citizens across the U.S. joined the hunt.

PCB cancels Bangla tour on security ground

Still bitter with Bangladesh for refusing to host Pakistan two years ago, the PCB has cancelled a series there on security grounds.

It is learnt that despite complaining of not getting enough international cricket in recent times, the PCB, since 2008, has twice rejected offers by the Bangladesh cricket Board to tour there.

"Clearly relations between the two boards are not very cordial at the moment. Pakistan also remains unhappy with the stance of the Bangladesh board when the ICC decided to move away the 2011 World Cup matches from Pakistan because ofsecurity concerns," one source said.

Relations between the two boards hit a rough note in early 2009 when Bangladesh refused to host Pakistan for a scheduled series of five one-day internationals and two Twenty20 matches in March.

Despite requests from the PCB, the tour was eventually called off by the BCB on government advice a day after terrorists attacked the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore on March 3.

Bangladesh declined to host Pakistan because of non-clearance from the government but the Pakistan board apparently took the snub badly.

"The feeling in the Pakistan board was that the BCB had let it down in it biggest crisis when it needed the support of its neighboring countries after the attack on the Sri Lankanteam.

"Matters turned sour later when Bangladesh also didn't resist any move by the ICC to shift the World Cup matches from Pakistan."

The source said since last year, the BCB had twice asked Pakistan to play the series that was called off in 2009 but the PCB appeared in no mood to close the chapter.

No foreign teams have toured Pakistan since the attack on the Sri Lankan team although Zimbabwe had agreed to play a short one-day series in Pakistan this year.

"The Zimbabwe cricket union had given the dates from December 8 to 19 to tour Pakistan but unfortunately when the PCB approached the government for security clearance the authorities didn't give the clearance since the month of Muharram fell in this period," the source said.

He said the PCB and Zimbabwe cricket union were now trying to work out new dates for the one-day series sometime in 2011.

PCB unhappy with BCCI over new FTP

The Pakistan Cricket Board and the BCCI are at loggerheads over the ICC's new Future Tours Program as the PCB claims that the Indian board is reluctant to give definite time frames for upcoming series.

Sources in the PCB aware of the discussions at the ICC chief executives meeting held recently in Dubai to discuss the 2012-2020 FTP confirmed that India had agreed to play against Pakistan in this period but has not given specific dates.

"The PCB's biggest issue is that India has said it would play twice against Pakistan at neutral venues but has given no dates. Secondly they are not willing to give enough time to Pakistan to play a full series," one source said.

"The time frame given by India means that Pakistan cannot play a full series against it and secondly the Indian board has made it clear any matches against Pakistan would be dependent on clearance from their government," he said.

The source disclosed that in the new FTP, India had suggested twice touring Pakistan for short series and host Pakistan twice.

"The PCB is not happy with the situation because it wants a longer series meaning more matches against India and confirmed dates. On other hand, India has just said they would play Pakistan in the periods they are free of other commitments in the FTP."

The source said PCB's biggest concern is that less number of matches against India mean loss of valuable finances.

"The cancellation of two series against India means a loss of around USD 70 million for the PCB which is a lot of money."

Pakistan's next scheduled series against India is also in 2012.

India has not played a bilateral series against Pakistan since 2007. The Indians were due to tour Pakistan in early 2009 for a full series but the plan was cancelled due to the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.

The source also disclosed that the PCB was unhappy that the ICC after earlier agreeing is now not willing to give Icon status to Indo-Pak series.

"Allowing Icon status would have meant that where Pakistan played two series against a particular team in the FTP against India it would have played three because of its icon status," the source stated.

The source said Pakistan was also not happy with other teams like Australia not giving a full series to Pakistan.

"Basically the Australians and some other teams have scheduled split tours against Pakistan and that is not making the PCB happy as it means additional production costs in broadcasting the series."

NKorea sends top diplomat to Russia

North Korea dispatched its top diplomat to Russia on Saturday amid a flurry of regional diplomacy aimed at defusing tensions over Pyongyang's deadly artillery attack on South Korea.

North Korean Foreign Minister Pak Ui Chun left for Russia, the North's official Korean Central News Agency reported in a one-sentence report. No details were given, but Pak on Friday accused South Korea and the United States of pursuing a policy of hostility and confrontation and reiterating that Pyongyang needs its nuclear program to fend them off.

"We once again feel convinced that we have made the right choice in strengthening our defenses with the nuclear deterrent," he said, according to an interview with the Russian news agency Interfax.

The trip comes two days after North Korean leader Kim Jong Il met in Pyongyang with Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo, Beijing's top foreign policy official. The two reached consensus on the situation on the Korean peninsula during candid and in-depth talks, China's official Xinhua News Agency has said, without elaborating.

It was not clear whether the two discussed the North's Nov. 23 artillery attack on a South Korean island near the Koreas' disputed western sea border. The barrage killed four South Koreans, including two civilians.

China has been under intense international pressure to use its diplomatic clout to rein in its ally North Korea.

Meanwhile, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson will visit North Korea next week, raising the prospect of a diplomatic resolution to the tensions. He is to depart from the U.S. on Tuesday.

The diplomatic troubleshooter has made regular visits to North Korea and has also hosted North Korean officials in New Mexico. He helped win the release of Americans held in North Korea in the 1990s and traveled to Pyongyang in 2007 to recover remains of U.S. servicemen killed in the Korean War.

Flurry of diplomacy

The flurry of diplomacy comes as South Korean President Lee Myung-bak expressed optimism during this week's trip to Malaysia that the reunification of Korea is drawing near.

"North Korea now remains one of the most belligerent nations in the world," Lee said in the interview published Friday in The Star, a Malaysian newspaper. But, he added, it's a "fact that the two Koreas will have to coexist peacefully and, in the end, realize reunification."

In a speech Thursday night, Lee made similar remarks, saying that North Koreans have become increasingly aware that the South is better off. He did not elaborate on how their knowledge has expanded, but he said it was "an important change that no one can stop."

"Reunification is drawing near," Lee said, according to the president's website.

He also called on China to urge ally Pyongyang to embrace the same economic openness that has led millions of Chinese out of poverty — and said that North Korean economic independence was the key to reunification.

Lee didn't give a specific timeframe for the reunification of Korea, which was divided after the end of Japanese rule and officially remains in a state of war because the Koreas' 1950-53 conflict ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty.

It wasn't clear why Lee was making a push for reunification now. South Korean leaders often call for a peaceful reunification with the North. There is in Seoul, however, a wariness of the huge social and economic costs associated with absorbing the impoverished North.

North Korea also has called repeatedly for reunification, but it imagines integration under its authoritarian political system. It has shown no sign that it would allow any reunification that results in its absorption by the richer South.

Highest Paid: Khali, Shweta or Dolly? Reality TV show Bigg Boss 4

As you know Indian TV stars don’t really flaunt their pay cheques unlike their US counterparts. But with American actress Kim Kardashian being declared as the highest paid reality TV star, we are now wondering how much the housemates of reality TV show Bigg Boss 4 are being paid. Especially when it was reported that Baywatch star Pamela Anderson was paid an astronomical fee of Rs. 2.5 crore for just a three day gig.

Since we don’t have actual figures, we’ve decided to estimate how much they make on the basis of the work they do in the house and how much they entertain. What do you think?

 highest_paid_bigg_boss_inmate
Reality TV star: Khali
Approx pay: Rs. 40-50 lakh per week
Deserved salary: Minus Rs. 50000 per week
Looks like this 38-year-old WWE wrestler Dalip Singh Rana aka The Great Khali is being paid in accordance with his weight, which is 190 kgs! But we think it’s highly unfair. If you go to see he doesn’t do a damn thing in the house. In fact he is the biggest kaam chor! Since reportedly he has already given a down payment of Rs. 50 lakh, we think the makers should deduct Rs. 50000 each week until he evicted. What say?
Reality TV star: Dolly Bindra
Approx pay: Rs. 2 lakh per week
Deserved salary: What Khali is actually being paid.
She can actually roll on the floor laughing, she can act like she’s possessed by a demon, she uses profanity like nobody’s business and barring Khali, there isn’t a single housemate that Dolly has not abused! The high TRPs of Bigg Boss 4 can solely be credited to her so it won’t be wrong to say that she deserves Khali’s pay.
Reality TV star: Shweta Tiwari
Approx pay: Rs. 5 lakh per week
Deserved salary: One crore!
First of all anyone who can get Dolly Bindra to apologise deserves a gold medal. But even if you argue that Dolly’s apology to Shweta was the channel’s ploy for higher TRPs, you still have to give it to her considering she has managed to survive without a single friend or confidante in the house.
Reality TV star: Veena Malik
Approx pay: Rs. 2 lakh per week
Deserved salary: Channel should be paying US to tolerate her!
Even for a normal human being Dolly’s antics won’t be as annoying as Veena’s nakhras (tantrums) are! She is such a drama queen and sly to say the least. We say get Begum Ali back and get her evicted because every time the spotlight is on her it make us switch to Kaun Banega Crorepati 4. Now that’s not good for the channel, is it?

Kavita Karkare rubbishes Digvijay's claim

The widow of slain Maharashtra ATS chief Hemant Karkare today slammed senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh for claiming that her husband feared for his safety from hardline Hindu groups, who were upset over his probe into the Malegaon bomb blast.

Talking to reporters here, Kavita Karkare accused Singh of playing votebank politics and denied that any conversation had taken place between her husband and the Congress leader, as claimed by the latter.
"When my husband was investigating the Malegaon blast and was looking for Hindu accused, there were reactions from Hindu organisations. Similarly, when earlier he was looking for Muslim accused, there was reaction from that community," she said, adding such reactions were natural.

Kavita said it was wrong to suggest that Hindu groups were linked to the 26/11 terror attacks. "Such statements will mislead people and benefit Pakistan."

"Mockery of my husband's sacrifice for political gain should stop," she said.

Singh has said hours before 26/11 attacks, Karkare had called him to say his life was under threat. The Congress leader said Karkare was depressed and worried by threats and personal attacks made in newspapers of Hindu organisations.

"I had spoken to him three and a half hours...it was between 6 and 7 PM on 26/11....I was very shocked when I came to know that he was killed," he said.

Digvijay Singh stoked a controversy with his claim that slain Mumbai ATS chief Hemant Karkare had called him hours before the 26/11 terror strikes, saying that he feared for his safety from Hindu extremists, triggering a strong reaction from the BJP.

"I had spoken to him three and a half hours...it was between 6 and 7 PM on 26/11....I was very shocked when I came to know that he was killed", he told reporters today.

Singh claimed that Karkare had talked about a threat to his life from those opposed to his probe into the Malegaon blast in which Hindu extremists were accused.

"When I called him he said, he was receiving some threat calls. He did not know who was calling. An article was published in a magazine linked to RSS against his son. It alleged that his son had got some Rs 50 crore contract from Dubai while his son was just 17-years-old," he said.

Suggesting that he and Karkare had come closer after he congratulated the slain ATS chief over the arrests in the Malegaon blasts, Singh said that Karkare was a "little depressed" that top leaders of BJP including Rajnath Singh were questioning his integrity.

"After Malegaon blast, we nabbed people about whom I had prior knowledge. They were involved in terrorist activities. They were involved in (Mau) bomb blast and Bhopal bomb blast. I knew all these", Singh, a former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, said.

BJP slams Digvijay

BJP today slammed Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh for his "irresponsible statement" on slain Mumbai ATS chief Hemant Karkare, saying it was a "serious blow" to India's fight against terror and was an attempt to divert attention from scams facing the UPA.

The party also demanded a clarification from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi on their stand over Singh's comments.

BJP Chief spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad strongly condemned Singh's "unfortunate" remarks yesterday that Karkare had informed him about the pressure from certain Hindu organisations as he was investigating cases allegedly involving Hindu terror groups.

"The country's security, fight against terror and investigations into the 26/11 attacks case has suffered a serious blow due to Digvijay Singh's comments. Terrorists from across the border will question the entire 26/11 attacks," Prasad told reporters here.

"Terrorists from across the border and their patrons are going to lap it up," he said.

He saw a "deliberate design" behind Singh's comment, saying, "it is an attempt to distract the embattled UPA and Congress party, which is facing a barrage of corruption charges. Congress is finding itself seriously handicapped".

The BJP leader alleged that Singh was making such statements to gain political mileage as he has been marginalised in the Congress. "He should find better ways to gain publicity and not make statements which harm national security," he said.

China says inflation up 5.1 pc in November

China's inflation surged to a 28-month high in November, officials said Saturday, despite government efforts to increase food supplies and end diesel shortages.

The 5.1 percent inflation rate was driven by a 11.7 percent jump in food prices year on year.

The news comes as China's leaders meet for the top economic planning conference of the year and as financial markets watch for a widely anticipated interest rate hike to help bring rapid economic growth to a more sustainable level.

"I think this means that an interest rate hike of 25 basis points is very likely by the end of the year," said CLSA analyst Andy Rothman.

China took the unusual move of releasing the inflation news on a Saturday, giving the markets time over the weekend to digest the news.

"So obviously we knew we were in for quite a large number," said Alistair Thornton, China analyst for IHS Global Insight. Economists had forecast that China's inflation rate would likely rise to over 5 percent in November.

China tried to calm the inflation news. "As long as all departments and regions conscientiously implement the 16 measures by the State Council for making prices stable, prices should be kept basically stable in the near future," said Sheng Laiyun, spokesman for the National Statistics Bureau.

Beijing is trying to rein in food prices by launching efforts to increase production of vegetables and other basic goods. Authorities are cracking down on hoarding and speculation they say are partly to blame for the price rises.

The bureau also said industrial output, an indicator of economic health, was up by 13.3 percent in November year on year. Retail sales were up 18.7 percent, important to the government's effort to build up domestic consumption to drive growth. Neither figure was a surprise.

Stimulus spending

China's inflation has risen steadily this year despite government efforts to cool an investment boom. It spiked to 4.4 percent in October — well above the official 3 percent target.

Economists blame the price hikes on a flood of money coursing through the economy from stimulus spending and bank lending that helped China recover quickly from the global crisis.

Inflation is especially sensitive in a society where poor families spend up to half their incomes on food. Rising incomes have helped to offset price hikes, but inflation undercuts economic gains that help support the ruling Communist Party's claim to power.

Tom Orlik, an analyst in Beijing for Stone & McCarthy Research Associates, said it was alarming to see price pressure moving beyond food prices. Housing prices were up 5.8 percent and health care prices were up 4 percent.

But Rothman said Chinese consumers with their growing income levels are in a better position to handle prices increases, and he pointed out that food still accounted for about 75 percent of the November price rises.

"So I think inflation continues to be primarily a weather phenomenon, with monetary policy playing a supporting role," he said, adding that recent bad weather had contributed to a shortage of food.

Thornton said one can see food prices tailing off week to week, which should show up in next month's inflation figures.

Inflation has risen well above the 2.5 percent paid on Chinese bank deposits. That has triggered an outflow of cash into stocks and real estate as families seek a better return, fueling fears of a dangerous price boom and bust.

Curb lending

Analysts have said inflationary pressure could spread to other areas unless Beijing hikes rates and tightens credit. They blame money flooding through the economy from Beijing's multibillion-dollar stimulus and two years of massive lending by state banks.

China on Friday ordered its banks to increase their reserves in a move to curb lending.

Communist leaders are trying to guide China's rapid expansion to a more sustainable level after growth eased to 9.6 percent in the three months ended September, down from a post-crisis peak of 11.9 percent in the first quarter.

But any moves that further slow growth could affect the United States, Australia and other economies by cutting demand for their exports of iron, machinery and other goods.

Costs for fuel and other necessities in China have also jumped as supplies have run short.

Coal, which fuels about three-quarters of the country's electricity generation, is a special concern, especially in winter months when it also is used in heating systems in the north.

The National Development and Reform Commission, China's main economic planning agency, has forbidden provinces from limiting shipments of coal beyond their borders, ordering them to ensure stable supplies.

Bomb kills 15 civilians in Afghanistan

A roadside bomb planted by the Taliban has killed 15 civilians in a dangerous and remote region of southern Afghanistan, officials said Saturday.

The attack happened Friday afternoon as a pickup truck carrying villagers to a nearby bazaar rolled over the bomb, detonating it in the Khan Neshin district of Helmand province, said Daoud Ahmadi, spokesman for the provincial governor.

"It was a very heavy explosion, the vehicle was destroyed," Ahmadi told The Associated Press by telephone from Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand province. Ahmadi said all the victims were men.

Calls to the area where the explosion happened did not go through Saturday.

The governor's office in Helmand province released a statement blaming the attack on "the enemy of people and the country."

NATO forces have poured troops into the southern provinces of Helmand and Kandahar, making some progress in routing the Taliban. But fighting and insurgent attacks have continued.

Also Saturday, a suicide bomber blew up a stolen police car that had been packed with explosives, injuring five Afghan soldiers and nine civilians near an army checkpoint in northern Afghanistan.

Muhbobullah Sayedi, the spokesman for the governor of Kunduz province, said the force of the blast Saturday morning destroyed several nearby homes. The only person killed was the suicide bomber.

Several of the civilians were in their homes at the time of the blast, Sayedi said.

The attack happened in Chahar Dara district, the most volatile district in the northern region.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in a text message sent to the media.

Sachin Tendulkar Said ‘No’ to Rs. 20 Crore Liquor Ad

MUMBAI: The great Sachin Tendulkar, idol of many youngsters and cricket freaks, had once again chosen principles over money by saying ‘no’ to endorse a liquor ad. As per the reports, Tendulkar refused a whopping Rs. 20 crore-offer to endorse a top liquor brand.

Sachin, who is admired by everyone when he is on the field, is also loved by his fans for his moral conduct. Following his middle class roots and traditional values, the master blaster refused to promote liquor or cigarettes.

However, the brand has not left any stone unturned to get the nod of Sachin for the deal by offering a whopping amount of Rs 20 crore a year to become its ambassador. But there is no information on which brand approached Sachin for the liquor endorsement.

Sachin Tendulkar

Sources revealed, “He (Sachin) has decided not to endorse products that are harmful to one’s health ever and has stayed away from them. This time, however, the lure was too high. Yet, he said no to the offer.”

A former player close to Tendulkar revealed that he is living up to the promise he made to his father. “His father had advised him against endorsing alcohol-related or tobacco products soon after he had made the Indian Test team. Anyways, money can never lure Tendulkar and this offer is a classic example of how he believes in his principles and values his cricket,” he said.

According to the experts of the commercial endorsement business, if Sachin agreed to the deal, it would have been the highest-ever deal for an Indian sportsperson.

Recently, Indian Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has signed a Rs. 26 Crore deal for three years with liquor baron Vijay Mallya’s UB group. The offer which was made to Sachin, was much higher than what Dhoni has inked. Refusing such a huge amount proves Tendulkar is person of great value and principles.

'Aussie players spoilt and mollycoddled'

Australian cricketers are "spoilt and mollycoddled", feel ex-players, who want former captain Mark Taylor to chair a crisis summit to find a way out of the slump that has engulfed the national team.

Former Test wicketkeeper Steve Rixon said Australia's continuing dismal performances, the most recent being the innings and 71 runs defeat to England in the second Ashes Test, is unacceptable.

"We've been spoilt and things have come too easy for us. We've not had to do the hard yards," Rixon said.

"There's no question we need a summit. We want Australian cricket to get back on top and now it's become frustrating. Mark Taylor would be perfect to oversee it (a summit). He's got a great cricket brain, and I'd have people like Steve Waugh.

"We need to have a look at our whole brand of cricket, from Test to one-day and Twenty20," he was quoted as saying by 'The Herald Sun'.

Rixon said fresh planning is needed urgently to arrest the slide.

"We need a think tank to come in at the end of this summer where we get past and current players and even some business people to come up with a blueprint on how to rebuild our game.

"To think we are fifth on the (ICC) table -- that's unacceptable. We should be in the top three. We need to start at the top with our selectors and look at every facet of our cricket."

Former Test selector John Benaud also trained his guns on the players and said they are too pampered.

"There's got to be more hangers-on in the Australian cricket team now than there are players," he said.

"Australia's cricketers are the most mollycoddled bunch. These guys need match practice, not blokes with video cameras filming players at training. They need good, hard work in the middle," he added.

The views were echoed by former Test skipper Kim Hughes.

"We've become a bit precious in the way we're treating our players. We're wrapping blokes up in cotton wool. Resting a guy like Mitchell Johnson from the WA side (playing Queensland in the Sheffield Shield) is just mind-boggling," he said.

OPEC ministers signal no output shifts

OPEC oil ministers signaled ahead of a Saturday meeting that they see no reason to change output targets given current global economic sluggishness, though they expect demand for crude will continue to grow.

"What's missing right now is equilibrium in the price of oil," Angola's oil minister, Jose Maria Botelho de Vasconcelos, said Friday after arriving in this Andean capital. "I think $90 dollars (a barrel) is a comfortable price."

OPEC, which is responsible for 35 percent of global oil production, has not changed its output quotas since late 2008. And last month, Saudi oil minister Ali Naimi said oil between $70 and $90 per barrel was tolerable for consumers.

He echoed that sentiment upon arrival in Quito on Friday

The 50-year-old cartel has had a good year, with prices hovering in the mid-$80 range and profits up 32 percent over 2009 to $750 billion, according to U.S. Energy Department estimates.

Oil reached a two-year high of nearly $91 on Tuesday — as traders gauged the dimensions of 2011 demand and responded to a particularly harsh onset of winter in Europe.

The International Energy Agency said Friday that stronger-than-anticipated consumption next year in North America and emerging Asian economies led by China could compel OPEC to boost supply "if prices continue their relentless rise."

Issuing its global oil demand forecast, the IEA said it anticipated a rise in demand next year to 88.8 million barrels a day, 260,000 daily barrels more than previously forecast.

The Paris-based agency nevertheless said it expected "quick agreement" from the OPEC ministers to maintain current output targets.

Analyst David Kirsch of PFC Energy in Washington agreed, citing current healthy inventories and continuing global economic uncertainty.

"If demand does turns out to be stronger than they've expected, there is still a safety cushion out there and they can come back later and increase production," he told The Associated Press. "Or more likely, what happens is that individual members cheat."

Oil supplies in major industrialized nations and China are currently well above normal, and while OPEC forecast a demand boost in North America and China in the monthly market report it published Friday it believes western Europe's festering debt crisis will dampen consumption there.

OPEC last changed output in late 2008 when it capped a record series of cuts to help boost prices that had plummeted with the global financial meltdown.

Some analysts believe conditions are now conspiring against much more upward pressure on prices as the effects wear off from the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank's decision to issue and buy up $2.3 trillion in U.S. Treasury bonds. The post-meltdown move — essentially printing money — made U.S. exports cheaper abroad and boosted the price of oil. It also encouraged the Chinese to buy and store more oil.

Many analysts believes $100 a barrel oil is inevitable in 2011 though it could well take months.

"It could be a pretty interesting journey from where we are now, especially given the economic risks that are still present in the market," Kirsch said.

Ecuador, which rejoined OPEC in 2007 after 15-year absence, holds the rotating presidency this year. Iran will take over for 2011.

New confession by woman in stoning case

An Iranian woman sentenced to death by stoning for adultery confessed to helping a man kill her husband and re-enacted the alleged crime in an interview broadcast Friday by Iranian state television — an apparent effort by the government to deflect international criticism over the case.

It was the fourth time Sakineh Mohammedi Ashtiani has been shown on TV as Tehran has faced an international outcry over the announcement that she would be stoned to death, the latest source of friction between Iran and the West.

Authorities announced her conviction in the murder case only after the uproar over the stoning sentence erupted last summer, and her lawyer — who has since been arrested — said she was never formally put on trial for the killing and was tortured into confessing. Iranian authorities could use the murder charge to justify executing Ashtiani by hanging instead of stoning.

In the new footage broadcast on English-language Press TV, the 43-year-old mother of two was brought from the prison to her home outside the city of Tabriz in northwestern Iran where she was shown acting out the alleged December 2005 killing, complete with an actor portraying her husband.

Ashtiani, dressed in black with a beige scarf covering her hair, described how she began an affair with another man identified as Isa Taheri. She said she gave her husband an injection that rendered him unconscious, then Taheri came to her house and electrocuted him.

Amnesty International criticized the broadcast, which was announced by Press TV earlier Friday, saying it violated international standards for a fair trial by having Ashtiani implicate herself in a crime.

"If the authorities are seeking to use this `confession' to try to construct a new case against her, for a crime that she's already been tried and sentenced for, we would condemn this in the strongest terms," Philip Luther, deputy director of Amnesty's Middle East and North Africa Program, said in a statement.

Purported confession

Ashtiani was convicted in 2006 of having an "illicit relationship" with two men after the murder of her husband the year before and was sentenced at that time to 99 lashes. Later that year, she was also convicted of adultery and sentenced to be stoned, even though she retracted a confession that she says was made under duress.

After coming under intense demands from Western politicians and rights groups to free Ashtiani, Iran put her stoning sentence for adultery on hold in July for review by the supreme court. It wasn't until more than a month later that her purported confession to involvement in the murder was aired and Iranian officials announced she had been convicted.

In the footage, Ashtiani said Taheri tied a wire to her husband's foot and another to his waist — events that were simulated for the broadcast — but it took seven tries for him to die. "The seventh time my husband didn't move. He died," she said.

The program, which was accompanied by a warning to viewers, showed close-up stll photographs of the husband's corpse, which appeared burnt.

The re-enactment was part of a half-hour news program about the case, which included interviews with her son, Sajjad Qaderzadeh, and her lawyer Houtan Kian, who also have been arrested. Press TV said two German journalists who were detained after trying to interview Ashtiani's family had declined to answer questions for the program.

The program's narrator said a police report showed Ashtiani had confessed to being involved in the murder of her husband and named Taheri as her accomplice. Police arrested Taheri in connection with the murder, and he also admitted the charge, according to the show.

International criticism

A German-based Iranian anti-stoning activist named Mina Ahadi claimed Ashtiani had been forced to make the confession, calling it propaganda. "It was all a total lie," she said, speaking from London in a telephone interview.

Ashtiani gave similar details in her previous confession on Aug. 12. She also was shown in two other appearances on state TV saying on Sept. 15 that she hadn't been tortured and on Nov. 15 that she was a sinner. But this was the first time she was shown in the house where the killing occurred.

It also was the first time Ashtiani's face was shown. In previous video of her aired on state TV, her face was blurred. The only previous image of her face was an undated picture released by Western human rights groups that seems to be an ID photo, showing a younger-looking Ashtiani with a black headscarf.

Iran has waged a heavy public campaign aimed at countering international criticism, accusing the West of stirring up controversy to damage the country's Islamic clerical leadership at a time of tension over the country's disputed nuclear program.

Amnesty International researcher Drewery Dyke said the program left him with "the fear the authorities are in the process of constructing the climate in which a new charge can be brought," and he criticized the decision to have Ashtiani re-enact the crime on camera.

Stoning was widely imposed in the years following the 1979 Islamic revolution, and even though Iran's judiciary still regularly hands down such sentences, they are often converted to other punishments. The last known stoning was carried out in 2007.

It was Sara Khan’s turn to leave the Bigg House on Friday when the voting results were announced. Finally, after a lot of drama and stunt, Sara Khan had to say the last good bye to the Bigg Boss house. Sara, the TV actress, made a lot of news ever since she entered the Bigg Boss House this season.

First, Sara and Ashmit Patel had an “affair” in the house where she clearly lambasted his boyfriend Ali Merchant in many of the episodes. NY Trustee seeks nearly $20 billion

The trustee seeking to recover money for investors who lost billions of dollars in jailed financier Bernard Madoff's fraud said Friday he has filed civil racketeering charges against an Austrian banker and 55 other defendants, demanding they give up nearly $20 billion as a penalty for their "criminal relationship" with Madoff.

Court-appointed trustee Irving Picard used tough language to portray a 23-year relationship between banker Sonja Kohn and Madoff, saying she and others engaged in money laundering, mail and wire fraud and financial institution fraud. He also accused her of accepting secret kickbacks from Madoff.

Picard also announced Friday that he reached settlements with a number of charities and nonprofit organizations to recover more than $80 million and resolve civil claims against charities that withdrew more money than they deposited in accounts with Madoff.

Picard filed a lawsuit in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan against members of what he labeled the "Medici Enterprise." He called Kohn the scheme's mastermind. A message for comment sent to a Kohn spokeswoman was not immediately returned.

"In Sonja Kohn, Madoff found a criminal soul mate, whose greed and dishonest inventiveness equaled his own," Picard said as he asked for $19.6 million in damages.

Timothy Pfeifer, Picard's court-appointed counsel, said Kohn used multiple names and guises in creating an "international network of spurious investment entities and masterminding an illegal scheme not only to support the Madoff fraud, but also to enrich herself, her family and the largest banks in Austria and Italy."

Charged in the complaint along with Kohn, the principal shareholder of Bank Medici, were six members of her family, along with various trusts and companies in New York, Austria, Italy, Gibraltar and elsewhere. Those companies included UniCredit and Bank Austria.

Picard alleged in the civil complaint that Kohn channeled more than $9 billion into Madoff's Ponzi scheme while she and her family siphoned at least $62 million from Madoff's accounts into their private accounts. He charges she used an elaborate network of sham entities in New York and elsewhere that existed solely to receive secret kickbacks from Madoff.

"The total amount lost in the Ponzi scheme is approximately $19.6 billion, making these actors arguably the single most critical building block — the `sine qua non' — of the Ponzi scheme," Pfeifer said.

Pfeifer said Kohn demonstrated her "intimate knowledge of Madoff's fraud" by acting suspiciously in the days and weeks before Madoff's December 2008 arrest.

He said she and her family used a network of trusts and nominee companies to launder the stolen proceeds of her scheme and to conceal it.

Picard said Madoff kept records of the accounts for which he secretly paid Kohn and appears to have tried to destroy the records before he confessed the fraud to his sons hours before his arrest.

He said Kohn solicited at least 30 direct accounts for Madoff.

"To potential investors, Kohn held herself out as a close friend of Madoff and intimated that this relationship would yield special returns for investors she referred," said David J. Sheehan, one of Picard's lawyers.

Sheehan said Kohn began the scheme almost immediately after meeting Madoff in the mid-1980s. He said the scheme was a secret even within Madoff's private investment business. He added that Kohn took calculated measures to distance herself and her family from the fraud.

Regarding the settlement with charities, Picard said he is pleased that some nonprofit organizations came forward to negotiate.

"Through these settlements, these admirable groups can continue with their good works and social programs. By settling, these charities remove the uncertainty generated by either potential claims or litigation, and, importantly, their donors can continue to contribute with confidence to their favorite charities," he said.

The 35-year-old actress loved working with her 'Tourist' co-star Johnny Depp and was surprised by his multiple talents. Uma Bharti may return to BJP soon: Advani

Senior BJP leader L K Advani today indicated that firebrand Hindutva leader Uma Bharti would return to the party soon to strengthen the organisation in Uttar Pradesh and contest elections from the state.

"Uma spoke to me, and on my advice, agreed that she would concentrate hereafter on strengthening the party unit in Uttar Pradesh, which ....had become greatly enfeebled. She said she would like to contest also from Uttar Pradesh," Advani wrote on his blog today.

After taking over as Party president last year, Nitin Gadkari had expressed the intention of bringing back Jaswant Singh and Uma Bharti to the party fold, Advani said.

Uma Bharti was sacked from BJP in 2005.

"Nitinji himself talked to Uma.... But she has sought some time from the Party President before plunging headlong into the fray," Advani said.

Speculation has been rife for several months now about Uma's return to BJP.

She had travelled to Raipur with Advani to attend the last rites of Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh's father earlier this year and also accompanied him to Somnath to offer prayers on the anniversary of his Rathyatra.

Advani said the party had become particularly weak in Uttar Pradesh since the 2004 elections.

"During those six years in office (1998-2004) our organisational network had become loose. Considered state-wise, the worst affected from this angle was the largest state of the country, Uttar Pradesh, a state in which we fared poorly both in 2004 as well as 2009," he said.

BJP expects Uma to rejuvenate the party in the northern state which sends 80 MPs to Lok Sabha.

However, he seemed to rule out elections anytime soon and dismissed speculation that the Congress-led UPA may dissolve Lok Sabha and go for early polls.

"No government chooses to go in for an early election unless it is confident of victory. UPA's stocks have never before been as low as they are today. The talk of dissolution was intended to frighten MPs. All opposition MPs Left, Right and Centre- had become a solid phalanx in support of the demand for a JPC," Advani said.

The senior leader maintained that Atal Bihari Vajpayee decided to go in for early polls in 2004 prompted by the victories in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan Assembly elections.

"I hold that we lost the 2004 polls mainly because of overconfidence and consequent complacency," he said.

MUMBAI: As per the latest buzz in the tinsel town, Kangana Ranaut will be soon seen in Ragini MMS scandal. After ‘Love Sex Aur Dhokha’, Producer –Director Ekta Kapoor will make a film ‘Ragini MMS’, for which she has approached Kangana Ranaut.

As per the reports, the movie named, Ragini MMS, is going to be a horror film based on the real life incident. Sources revealed that a real life couple approached her with a video tape that showed the girl possessed by something paranormal during their lovemaking session. When Ekta watched the footage of a girl involved in the MMS scandal, she was convinced of making a film on it.

It’s going to be next psychological thriller from Balaji’s banner. Balaji Production has already bought the copyright from the victims of the scandal and has started work on it.

Kangana Ranaut

Ekta, excited about the concept, said, “I am super excited about this project. It has none of the conventional horror film trappings, bloodbaths, gore or creaky doors.”

“I could have gone ahead and made another LSD 2, but I didn’t want that. When I read the script for Raginni, I knew it would be kickass. I am a huge fan of horror films like Paranormal Activity and Blair Witch Project and the way they have been marketed are brilliant.”

“We plan to devise new and unique ways to create buzz about Raginni in the coming months,” she added.

As per reports, Ekta will announce the film on Bigg Boss show in the presence of the host Salman Khan. Kangana Ranaut has been approached by the Ekta for the role of that girl in the MMS scandal. The movie is expected to go on floors in December.

Sachin a class apart, says Viv Richards

Sachin Tendulkar's career longevity and his remarkable achievements make him a class apart, according to the legendary Sir Vivian Richards who reckons that the Indian maestro has set benchmarks that no other contemporary cricketer can come anywhere close to.

Richards said Tendulkar has survived for so long in international cricket because of his "amazing dedication" and it was only a matter of time when he scripts history by becoming the first cricketer to score 50 Test centuries.

"He can certainly achieve that (scoring 50 Test centuries). I think the way the games are going at present, it would be very difficult for anyone to break that record. He is way ahead of others," Richards told PTI in an interview here today.

Richards, one of the most destructive batsman of his era, said only Australian captain Ricky Ponting had a slim chance of coming anywhere near Tendulkar's records among contemporary cricketers.

"I can't see any individual, the closest guy who would come to that may be Ricky (Ponting). But the way things are going on in Australia, they are calling for his head, so I don't know really know how long he will be around. He is the only individual I think who could be close to Sachin's record. But I think it would be hard to surpass," he said.

The West Indian batting great attributed Tendulkar's longevity to the way he has conducted himself right through his career and his discipline among other things.

"Tendulkar is 37, still going great. It's all about how you have conducted yourself. I guess there were times when it looked pretty doubtful with injuries, starting with the back, would have most certainly affected his career but it's due to persistence, dedication, discipline and confidence that you survive for so long," he explained.

Richards spoke on a variety of subjects ranging from India's prospects in the upcoming World Cup, best captains in the modern era and the reasons for the sharp decline of West Indies cricket during the interview.

The former captain had rated Virender Sehwag as the most destructive batsman in modern era but did he see any similarity in the Indian swashbuckler and his own batting?

"I think he has his own way of playing. Any comparison that could be is that he has no fear. I had no fear about fast bowlers. He trusts his instincts and I admire him 100 per cent for that attitude. He is a stylish player and has got the trust in himself which is very much required," he said.

Richards, who was here for an ESPN promotional event for the upcoming cricket World Cup, picked India as one of the strong favourites to lift the coveted cup.

"I see for sure the way India have been playing against New  Zealand, they have to be a strong contender. There are new guys who have been coming which means there is a reserve strength as good as anything. That is if any main guy or 1, 2 3 go, you have individuals who have experience.

"This is what happened against New Zealand the other day (in Bangalore). They posted a winning total of 315 but individuals who were not that experienced came and stole the show and took India to the finishing line," said Richards, who scored 8540 runs in 121 Tests at an average of 50.23.

Asked to pick best international captain right now, Richards singled out India's Mahendra Singh Dhoni and England's Andrew Strauss.

"I think Strauss is looking pretty good. I think Dhoni would have done his bit taking his team to where they are at the number one position in the world. These are some of the guys who have been attractive as far as captaincy is concerned," he said.

On whether he was interested in coaching an international team, he said, "Well I won't say I am interested in coaching an international team because there are certain things which are required for the coaching badge."

"I don't have the credentials for that matter to do it basically for the long term because of the requirement of the coaching badge. I think when you you have played 100 odd matches and experienced enough, there's a certain amount of knowledge that you can apply.

"My experience and knowledge will suggest that there is an enormous understanding of the game. I believe, sometimes you place too much emphasis on the game overall. You need to keep it as simple as possible, avoid the complicated sides of the thing. Some of the coaches don't quite have the experience of playing the game," he pointed out.

Richards attributed the retirement of several key players in the Australian team in a short span as the reason for the decline of the team and said this happens to every side which has been at the top for long.

"It is because of retirement of some of the key players. (Shane) Warne was one of the world beaters. (Glenn) McGrath was a world beater. People like (Adam) Gilchrist. You are bound to miss these individuals. You need good reserves to come through that phase," he pointed out.

"When you hear that people want Warne to come back, it's an indication that they have declined to a certain degree and it happens.

"If you look down at the age of Australian cricket. Katich is 35, Ricky Ponting is in his 30s, Hussey is in his 30s all of these individuals are going to create that vacuum for better teams to have a go at them. What's happening now happens with every team which has been at the top for a very long time," Richards explained.

On the controversial Umpire Decision Review System, Richards said it should be applied only when there is a foolproof mechanism and all the teams have faith in it.

"Umpires could be there but if you look for assistance, then why not. Why not have the referral system? I am also hearing that some sides want to use it for some matches. But you don't have the resources to benefit all the matches.

"There may be a case that a team may be affected which can stop them from progressing. There needs to be an all-round system where everyone benefits from it. It should be applied when foolproof mechanism is there and all the teams have faith in it.
