Nepal's ex-prince Paras Shah in gun brawl

Nepal's former crown prince Paras Shah reportedly opened fire in the air after a heated argument with the daughter and son-in-law of Deputy Prime Minister Sujata Koirala at a jungle resort in the country.

According to a close associate of Sujata, the firing took place at Tiger Tops Resort at Chitawan National Park in southern Nepal.

It is learnt that Shah had a verbal argument with Melanie, Sujata's daughter and her husband Subel Chaudhary, a Bangladeshi national, last night.

Paras, 39, notorious for his flamboyant lifestyle and arrogance in the past, opened fire in the air for five times accusing that Sujata's father Girija Prasad Koirala had hatched conspiracy to abolish monarchy.

Shah claimed that he fired a round in air after being provoked by a Bangladeshi and an Indian citizen, the Republica reported.

Former Prime Minister Koirala had played key role in abolishing the 240 year old monarchy in May 2008.

Both Chaudhary couple and Paras along with some of his friends were staying in the same resort and they had heated arguments before the firing occurred, a source close to Koirala said on condition of anonymity.

No one was injured in the incident and later the security personnel had to intervene to stop the quarrel, the source said.

When contacted, Nepal Police spokesman Bigyan Raj Sharma said that he has no information about the incident and they were trying to find out the truth.

Sujata, who was in Singapore reportedly telephoned Home Minister Bhim Rawal to look into the matter and take legal action against Paras, according to The Kathmandu Post.

"I did speak to Karkare," asserts Digvijay

Senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh, who created a flutter by stating that slain Maharashtra ATS chief Hemant Karkare was under threat from right-wing groups, today insisted that he had spoken to the police officer a few hours before the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai in 2008.
"I am trying to get the records and I am sure those who are saying that I did not talk to Karkare would be proved wrong," he told PTI.
Digvijay's remarks came following a media report which said that call records of Karkare's cell phone showed that he had neither called nor received a call from the Congress general secretary during that period.
"I am absolutely firm on this. I did speak to Karkare and I have stated that already," Digvijay said in Guwahati.
As he came under fire, Digvijay had yesterday stuck to his stand that Karkare had spoken about threats from right-wing groups during the telephonic conversation with him.
Digvijay had subsequently clarified that he never doubted the role of Pakistani elements in the Mumbai attacks.
Singh also trained his guns on BJP, maintaining that the opposition party lent its support to Hindu radical groups.
The BJP demanded that Congress force Singh to resign from the party for his "absurd" remarks that Karkare had told him hours before the 26/11 strike that he feared for his safety from Hindu extremists in the wake of the Malegaon blast probe.
Targeting BJP, Digvijay had said "I want to ask (L K) Advaniji and Rajnathji why they went to meet the PM after Sadhvi Pragya was arrested after the Malegaon blast.

"Why did Rajnathji go to the jail to meet her? BJP has to answer these questions before they ask some to my Prime Minister."
Asserting that he had never doubted the role of Pakistani elements in Mumbai strikes, he said, "I also never said that right-wing activists were behind the terror attacks".
Trying to disassociate Congress party from the issue, Digvijay said, "its not a Congress party issue... the issue was a conversation between Digvijay Singh and Karkare".
Congress has distanced itself from Digvijay's statement, saying the matter was "a conversation between two individuals".
BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said the Congress should force Digvijay to resign.
Karkare was probing the Malegaon blast in which Hindu terror groups were suspected, and had led some BJP leaders like Rajnath Singh to question his integrity and commitment.

Premier League: Chelsea draw Spurs 1-1

Didier Drogba came off the bench Sunday to earn Chelsea a 1-1 draw at Tottenham, although the striker wasted a chance to clinch his team's first Premier League win for a month when he missed an injury-time penalty.

Roman Pavlyuchenko had put the home side ahead in the 15th minute but Drogba, who entered the game at halftime, equalized midway through the second half when he latched onto a bouncing ball in the area and smashed a shot at goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes, who fumbled it over the line.

In the second minute of added time, Gomes then barged Ramires over in the area following a flick on by Drogba.

Instead of putting the resulting penalty to the goalkeeper's right — as he had done for his four previous kicks — Drogba hit it the other way and Gomes made a comfortable save to stretch Chelsea's run without a win to five league matches.

Chelsea still moved level on points with third-place Manchester United, but United can leapfrog Manchester City and provisional leader Arsenal if it beats the Gunners on Monday. "We fully deserved to win the game," Chelsea captain John Terry said. "We dominated them. That's more like the Chelsea we all know."

But Chelsea has now lost three and drawn two of its last five matches at White Hart Lane.

Also Sunday, Stuart Holden scored with two minutes left to help Bolton overcome its fourth red card of the season and beat Blackburn 2-1. Stephen Hunt scored to give Wolverhampton Wanderers a 1-0 win over Birmingham that boosts its attempt to avoid relegation.

Chelsea enjoyed the best of the opening exchanges at White Hart Lane until Pavlyuchenko took a pass inside the area from fellow striker Jermain Defoe and pushed it laterally past two defenders with his first touch before scoring with a firm shot low past goalkeeper Petr Cech at his near post.

Nicolas Anelka had an equalizer ruled out for offside just before halftime and Gomes made two good second-half saves before his mistake gave Drogba his eighth league goal of the season.

Drogba appeared to handle the ball as he challenged defender Michael Dawson but the defender hesitated as he turned toward his own goal, giving Drogba time to get there first. Drogba lashed a shot at Gomes and, although the goalkeeper blocked it, the pace of the ball caused it to spin off his gloves and up over his head into the goal.

It was Drogba's 37th goal in his past 48 Premier League matches.

Both teams went for the win, Tottenham introducing Peter Crouch and Robbie Keane as Chelsea's Frank Lampard made his first appearance for three months as a 78th-minute substitute. "Credit to Chelsea, they're champions and they don't give up," Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp said. "It says that we're as good a side as almost anybody. We'll only get stronger."

Chelsea moved to 31 points, still four clear of fifth-place Tottenham. "When we were down, we did not lose control. We maintained composure," Chelsea coach Carlo Ancelotti said. "We were very close to winning and we will win the next game."

Chelsea's next match is Sunday, against Manchester United.

At Bolton, Blackburn's Mame Biram Diouf had just equalized but Holden burst forward following the resulting kickoff to run onto a flick by Kevin Davies and half-volley past goalkeeper Paul Robinson from just outside the area.

The American midfielder's second goal of the season lifted Bolton to sixth place and 26 points, just six behind Arsenal. "What I loved was that, having lost an equalizer so late in the game and being down to 10 men, it would be easy to feel sorry for yourself," Bolton manager Owen Coyle said.

"But with this group, their first instinct was to go forward and to try to win it, even with 10 men."

Bolton took the lead shortly after going down to 10 men, bringing on Fabrice Muamba as a 58th-minute substitute moments after midfielder Mark Davies was sent off for a second yellow card.

Muamba, an England under-21 midfielder, had been on the field for just seven minutes when he cut inside defender Ryan Nelsen to score with a low shot to the near post.

But Diouf, the Senegal striker on loan at Blackburn from Manchester United, made Blackburn's pressure and numerical advantage count in the 87th. Diouf collected a pass from Jason Roberts, held off a defender and lifted the ball over diving goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen.

But Holden made sure the tie lasted for only seconds.

Elsewhere, Hunt scored his second goal of the season and Wolves stopped the opposition from scoring for the first time this season to go to 15 points, three clear of last-place West Ham and just one point away from climbing out of the three-team relegation zone.

Vettori blames self, seniors for poor show

Dejected after the embarrassing ODI series whitewash against India, New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori today said senior players, including himself, will have to take the blame for the debacle.
"It's about players standing up and performing, Vettori told 'ONE News' on the team's return to the country after a 0-5 drubbing in India.
"If we look at the reasons for the losses being because of selection or management structure we are absolving the players and myself included - so the players need to stand up," said the talismanic leg-spinner, who has been leading the side since 2007.
Set to take a break to nurse a sore back, Vettori rejected suggestions that his multiple roles of being a captain, selector and key all-rounder were affecting the team's power balance.
Vettori said his teammates are "comfortable" with his multiple roles but conceded that the fans might be running out of patience considering that his side has now lost 11 one-day international matches on the trot. "Yeah, of course I don't blame them. This team is hurting itself. It's a miserable time for New Zealand cricket," Vettori said.
"We did so well in the first couple of Test matches and then to let it all slip in the last Test and the one-day series, it hurts. And the only reason you play the game is to win and the only reason a lot of New Zealanders watch us play is to see us win.
"So we have to give that to them as soon as possible or otherwise it's going to be really upsetting to a lot of people," he added.
Kiwi coach Mark Greatbatch echoed Vettori's views and said the team is "exceptionally disappointed and embarrassed."

Stalling House may yield results: Advani

The opposition's move not to allow Parliament to function till its demand for a JPC probe into 2G spectrum scam is met could yield desired results, senior BJP leader L K Advani today said.

"Sometimes, business not proceeding also yields results," he told reporters.

Advani was asked to comment on Parliament failing to transact virtually any business during the Winter Session which ends today.

When asked for her reaction on the ongoing logjam, Speaker Meira Kumar said: "I am anguished" at the situation.

Today, both the Houses stood disrupted for the 23rd consecutive day over the opposition demand for a JPC probe.

This is possibly the longest disruption in Parliament.

The opposition demand for JPC into the Rs 64 crore kickbacks into the Bofors gun deal had also led to disruption of Parliament for about 45 days in 1987, but the government has maintained there has been no shutdown like this.

Rupee sheds 15 paise against US dollar

The Indian rupee fell by 11 paise to Rs 45.20 per US dollar in early trade at the Interbank Foreign Exchange today as the American currency posted gains against its major currency rivals on the back of good economic and industrial output data.

The rupee had ended 16 paise higher at Rs 45.05/06 against the US dollar in the previous session on Friday.

Forex dealers said dollar gains against other major currencies and demand from importers put pressure on the rupee. A better opening in the stock market capped the rupee's losses, they added.

The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex rose by 95.81 points, or 0.49 per cent, to 19,604.70 in opening trade today.

Dubai World gets new head amid debts

Dubai's ruler has replaced the longtime head of Dubai World with his close aide and uncle as the debt-laden conglomerate works to retool its business.
Sheik Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum was named chairman of the sprawling conglomerate, whose holdings include seaports, high-end retailer Barneys New York and a stake in Las Vegas casino operator MGM Mirage, in a decree carried last evening by state news agency WAM.
The order reshuffled the rest of the company's board too, giving seats to top lieutenants of Dubai's ruler who are charged with cleaning up the emirate's financial troubles.
Among them are Mohammed al-Shaibani, director of the Ruler's Court, the seat of executive power in the emirate, and Ahmed Humaid al-Tayer, who heads the Dubai International Financial Center banking hub.
Sheik Ahmed replaces as chairman Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, who spearheaded Dubai World's supercharged growth but also oversaw the accumulation of what turned out to be unmanageable levels of debt.
Sheik Ahmed holds multiple roles in Dubai. He is best known as the chairman and CEO of Emirates, the city-state's rapidly expanding international airline, and is president of Dubai's civil aviation department. He also chairs a government committee set up to oversee Dubai World in the wake of the emirate's financial crisis.
Dubai World is at the center of the emirate's financial troubles, which erupted late last year when the conglomerate called for new terms on billions of dollars of debt it owed. The surprise announcement and the uncertainty that followed rattled markets the world over.
The company has taken steps since to get its finances in order. It won full support from creditors for its $24.9 billion debt restructuring in October following months of negotiations.
Its subsidiary Nakheel, the property developer that spent billions to build Dubai's many manmade islands, is in separate talks to re-negotiate terms on at least $10.5 billion in debt it owes.
Dubai officials said recently the emirate is considering selling more assets and offering shares in state-run companies to raise cash.
Dubai World's new board will have the power to approve asset sales, including real estate, stocks, bonds and other holdings, according to the decree.

RSS chief Bhagwat's U-turn on Ayodhya case

The RSS seems to have changed its mind on the Allahabad High Court verdict on the Ayodhya title suit. The organisation's chief Mohan Bhagwat now says that division of the land into three parts, as ordered by the court, is not an option.

Addressing a huge 'Viraj Hindu Sammelen' (Hindu convention) at the Reshimbagh ground here last evening evening, Bhagwat said this (division) cannot be an option of division of Ramjanma bhoomi while reiterating the commitment to build Ram temple in Ayodhya.

"India can be united and unanimous if the Ram temple is built at same place," Bhagwat said adding if a huge Ram temple is built it will create an environment of unity in the country.

The division of Ramjanma bhoomi will also divide the society and the politics of anti-national forces will reign upper hand, he said.

Without mentioning Congress, Bhagwat said some parties are trying to attract Muslim votes. "They are pointing fingers at RSS which is serving the cause of Hindus in the country since last 85 years selflessly," he said.

"One round of battle for Ram temple is already over and Lord Rama has given us a quite break for relaxation. Now we should resume our fight for the cause. The High Court decision has given us strength as a first step," Bhagwat told the gathering.

Brad Pitt's family photo wish

Brad Pitt gets annoyed with partner Angelina Jolie for not clicking photos herself which means the actor is often left out of family snaps. The Changeling star said that Pitt, with whom she raises six children, likes to takes pictures of their family but hardly gets included in them himself, reported Contactmusic.

"I actually never take pictures and I think it drives Brad a bit crazy because he's in no family photos - he takes them all, and so I need to start trying," said Jolie. The 35-year-old actress admitted she doesn't worry about what people think of her because she is so caught up in raising her children - Maddox, nine, Pax, seven, Zahara, five, Shiloh, four and twins Knox and Vivienne, two.

"My real life is like 90 per cent contained in my house with my kids that just think I'm weird. So I don't have that life of how you walk down the street and how people perceive you."

Winter session of Parliament washed out

The winter session of Parliament today ended without transacting any substantial business, going down in Parliamentary history as the only session virtually washed out due to standoff between the government and Opposition over 2G spectrum scam.

Parliament could function barely for a few hours during the 23 sittings which began on November 9, as the united Opposition forced adjournments almost everyday, within minutes of assembling.

Opposition members trooping into the well and shouting slogans demanding JPC probe into the 2G spectrum allocation became a daily routine in both Houses.

Normalcy was seen in the Lok Sabha only on the first day of the session when the Rajya Sabha was adjourned because of death of a sitting member.

Despite a number of meetings between the government and Opposition, the impasse continued as the BJP-led NDA, the Left parties, AIADMK, SP, TDP and BJD persisted with their demand for a JPC into the 2G spectrum scam.

The Opposition got a shot in the arm after the CAG report, tabled in Parliament on November 16, said the spectrum allocation in 2008 had caused a presumptive loss of Rs 1.76 lakh crore to the exchequer.

The Opposition was not satisfied even though Telecom Minister A Raja quit.

The government, on the other hand, continuously rejected the demand for JPC maintaining that the Public Accounts Committee was adequately equipped to probe the irregularities.

This session earned the dubious distinction of being virtually washed out, although Parliament had witnessed logjam for 17 days over Tehelka scam in 2001 and disruptions for 45 days over Bofors scandal in 1987.

Before adjourning the Upper House sine die, Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari conveyed his displeasure stating the 221st session displayed "distinct" features and asked members to introspect.

"No debates or discussions on matters of public interest took place; no special mentions were made or laid on the table; no zero hour interventions were sought; no questions were answered orally and no supplementary questions were raised," he said.

Ansari said all sections of the House would "perhaps introspect on the record of this session to seek the distinction between dissent, remonstration, agitation and disruption."

When asked for her reaction on the ongoing logjam, Speaker Meira Kumar said outside the House, "I am anguished" at the situation.

Amid the pandemonium, the government managed to get its financial bills involving supplementary demands for about Rs 46,000 crore passed.

Chidambaram clears air over migrant remark

Home Minister P Chidambaram today sought to blame migrants to Delhi for crimes like rape, a statement that came under attack from political leaders, following which he withdrew it.
"......nevertheless crime takes place because Delhi attracts a large number of migrants. There are a large number of unauthorised colonies. And these migrants who settle in city's north-west colonies carry a kind of behaviour which is unacceptable in any modern city. So crimes do take place," Chidambaram told reporters on the sidelines of a function.
Condemning the recent rape incidents in the capital, he said steps are being taken by setting up more police stations, recruiting more police men and putting more police vehicles on the roads to improve the law and situation here.
Chidambaram's remarks were criticised by BJP, RJD and SP leaders who said it was made to cover up his and Delhi Police failure.
Shortly later, the Home Minister issued a clarification saying he did not refer to any state or region or language or race or religion and was conscious that every one who came to work in Delhi was, in a sense, a migrant, including himself.
He said when he was asked a question about the recent incidents of rape in Delhi and the alleged failure of the Delhi Police, his reply had a "matter of fact reference to migration, unauthorised settlements and behaviour that is unacceptable".
Chidambaram said he was dismayed that some people have pounced upon the word "migrant" and have raised a controversy.
"The country faces many real issues and I have no desire to say or do anything that will distract from the real issues. I have nothing against migration or migrants, being a migrant myself. I was pointing to 'behaviour that is unacceptable'. Nevertheless, I think the best way to put an end to any controversy would be to withdraw the whole of my answer to the question, and I do so.
"I would request every one, including the Delhi Police, to focus on the real issues of crime, crime prevention and crime detection," he said.

Oil rises above $88 in Asia

Oil prices  rose above $88 a barrel Monday in Asia after OPEC left its crude output quotas unchanged, citing slowing demand and abundant supplies.

Benchmark oil for January delivery was up 34 cents to $88.13 a barrel at midday Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract lost 58 cents to settle at $87.79 on Friday.

Ministers from the 12-nation Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries said at a meeting in Quito, Ecuador on Saturday that a "fragile global economic recovery" and "fears of a second banking crisis in Europe" kept the cartel from raising oil production.

Many OPEC nations depend on oil sales for foreign currency reserves and government spending and are reluctant to take measures to undermine prices. However, a jump in crude prices would spark inflation and hurt global economic growth.

"The ministers generally love existing prices," Cameron Hanover said in a report. "Some insiders have hinted at a quota increase if crude oil prices break above $100 a barrel."

In other Nymex trading in January contracts, heating oil rose 1 cent to $2.47 a gallon, gasoline futures added 1.8 cents to $2.33 a gallon and natural gas jumped 7.1 cents to $4.49 per 1,000 cubic feet.

In London, Brent crude rose 47 cents to $90.95 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

Miley pictures sparks anti-salvia movement

Teen pop star Miley Cyrus who was caught on camera smoking the hallucinogenic herb salvia, has become the unintentional face of a campaign to ban the drug. The video of the 'Hannah Montana' star giggling uncontrollably after smoking a bong containing salvia was allegedly made at her home near Los Angeles, California, five days after she turned 18 on November 23.

Anthony Adams, an anti-drug campaigner plans to use the example of Cyrus to ask for a ban on the herb, reported TMZ. "It can make you do incredibly crazy things. Miley is a star and young kids are going to emulate her behavior," said Adams.

Back in 2007, Adams tried to get salvia outlawed and classified as a Schedule I controlled substance, the same as LSD and marijuana. When the bill was voted down Adams settled for restrictions on selling salvia to minors. It is still legal in California for adults. After seeing the video of Cyrus smoking the drug, Adams thinks this is the perfect time to bring back his failed bill.

"It's time for state and federal governments to renew their push toward an outright ban," said Adams.

American midwest goes into deep freeze

A powerful storm that unleashed snow and strong winds across the upper Midwest left behind dangerously cold temperatures, promising a new set of challenges for people working to dig out.

The weekend storm closed major highways in several states, canceled more than 1,600 flights in Chicago and collapsed the roof of the Minnesota Vikings' stadium. At least six weather-related deaths were reported. As the storm marched east, heavy snow was reported in parts of northwest Indiana and southeast Michigan on Monday.

The storm was headed northeast toward Canada, according to the National Weather Service, with snow possible Monday in Michigan, northern Indiana and parts of Pennsylvania and New York. Nearly 2 feet of snow fell in parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin during the weekend.

Officials said plunging temperatures and winds could make clearing roads even more difficult and could lead to a slow morning commute, even in places where the storm had passed. With the wind chill, temperatures in some areas were expected to be well below zero.

"With the snow, pretty much the worst of it's over, but we're going to get cold temperatures through Tuesday," said Jim Taggart, National Weather Service meteorologist in Chanhassen, Minn. He said the weather the region is experiencing is what it "normally would get in January" but not December.

In Minneapolis, heavy snow caused the inflatable roof of the Metrodome to collapse Sunday. Video inside the stadium aired by Fox Sports showed the inflatable Teflon roof sagging before it tore open, dumping massive amounts of snow across one end of the playing field.

No one was hurt, but the Vikings' game against the New York Giants had to be moved to Detroit's Ford Field. The day of the game had already been pushed back from Sunday to Monday because the storm kept the Giants from reaching Minneapolis on time. Stadium officials were trying to repair the roof in time for the Vikings' next home game, Dec. 20 against Chicago.

In the Chicago area, only a few inches of snow fell, but wind gusts of up to nearly 50 mph blew the roof off a building at Navy Pier and sent waves from Lake Michigan crashing onto Lake Shore Drive.

The wintry weather, with blowing snow that severely limited visibility, wreaked havoc on air and road travel. At least 1,375 flights were canceled at O'Hare International Airport and more than 300 were canceled at Midway International Airport, Chicago Department of Aviation spokeswoman Karen Pride said.

Officials at O'Hare set up about 200 cots and provided amenity kits containing toothpaste and toothbrushes for stranded travelers, Pride said.

Jordan Ledoux was traveling back to Portland after a visit to Houston when he ended up stuck at O'Hare. He said it was possible he might not get home until Tuesday. "This is the worst flying experience I've ever had," he told WBBM-TV.

Major highways in several states were closed due to poor driving conditions and accidents.

In Indianapolis, police said a man fatally stabbed his wife, then died four blocks from his home Sunday morning when his vehicle hit a tree after he lost control on a slippery road. Police did not immediately release the names of the couple.

Seven vehicles crashed on Interstate 94 about 50 miles west of Milwaukee, prompting authorities to close the westbound lanes. A vehicle lost control on an ice-covered road and slammed into a tree in southeastern Wisconsin, killing 21-year-old Alejandria Abaunza of Chicago and injuring two other people inside.

In Michigan, authorities said an 80-year-old man was killed when his pickup truck rolled on a slick highway in Montcalm County. Weather also was believed to be a factor in a head-on collision in Livingston County that killed a 75-year-old woman.

AAA-Michigan said it helped 2,500 motorists on Sunday and had heard from hundreds more by 5 am EST Monday. "A lot of cars in ditches, spinouts, dead batteries," spokeswoman Nancy Cain said.

Authorities also said weather played a role in the death of Douglas Munneke, 55, of St. Cloud, Minn. He died of a heart attack after collapsing while he was snow-blowing his driveway Saturday.

In western Wisconsin, a 79-year-old man snow-blowing the end of his driveway was killed when a plow truck backed into him. Snow also blanketed Tennessee, where up to 4 inches was reported. WSMV-TV in Nashville said the weather forced several communities to cancel Christmas parades planned for Sunday.

Katrina Kaif has been named the Sexiest Woman in the World for the third year

Bollywood beauty Katrina Kaif has been named the Sexiest Woman in the World for the third year in a row, beating off competition from her contemporaries like Freida Pinto and Priyanka Chopra.
The actress whose moves in the hit dance number earned her plenty of fans, topped London based newspaper Eastern Eye’s list of the hottest women in the world.
The star of one of the year’s biggest hits Raajneeti and hotly anticipated Christmas release Tees Maar Khan is excited about the hat-trick.
"I’m very happy that I have made it to the top of Eastern Eye’s list again. England is off course a very special place to me and I think it’s very sweet to be voted the sexiest by them. I just want to thank everyone for the support," said the 26-year-old actress.
The actress who reportedly split from on-off boyfriend Salman Khan this year, came out on top of the survey conducted by the newspaper, Britain’s only national English language weekly serving the whole Asian community in the UK.

Katrina Kaif Sexiest Woman
The list was calculated on the basis of the most photographed women in the world and the most in-demand with film producers and fans.
"Although Bollywood heroines dominated the top 10, the list for 2010 included stunning beauty pageant winners, top actresses from around the world, pop stars and TV personalities. That is why Katrina should be deservedly proud of her amazing win," Eastern Eye showbiz editor Asjad Nazir said.
Priyanka Chopra narrowly missed out on the top spot by finishing second for the second year in a row. Pakistani actress Mehwish Hayat came eighth, a spot behind Kareena Kapoor.
Bipasha Basu occupied the third spot and Freida Pinto, India’s most popular export to Hollywood only managed a fourth position, while Lara Dutta rounded off the top five.
Katrina Kaif was born in Hong Kong to a Kashmiri father and British mother. She spent her childhood in Hawaii and later moved to England.
She first came to the notice of filmmaker Kaizad Gustad while she was modelling for a jewellery campaign in London and that led to her break in Bollywood in the film

Sonia Gandhi Turns down Opposition Demand for JPC in 2G scam

NEW DELHI: AICC chief Sonia Gandhi on Monday turned down the opposition’s demand for a JPC into the 2G spectrum scam, saying that there was no need for a JPC when the PAC and CBI were looking into it. The Supreme Court is also monitoring the 2G spectrum scam as well a retired apex court judge is inquiring into the matter.

While rejecting the JPC probe into the 2G scam in her address to the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) general body meeting in New Delhi, Sonia Gandhi hit out at the opposition, saying that the country will not forget and forgive them for wasting the entire Parliament session for the 2G issue.

She slammed BJP saying, “The BJP should look at its own track record. The main opposition party should not denigrate Parliament.”

Sonia-Gandhi

While addressing the CPP meet Congress President also cited the example of corruption by BJP leaders during the NDA government. She talked about coffin scam and bribery issues by Bengaru Laxman which were caught on camera. She said, “In contrast, the BJP not only in Karnataka but right from Tehelka, right from so many other scams during the NDA has consistently overlooked, brushed aside or supported the situation of corruption.”

“They have reinstated persons while inquiries were going on,” she added.

Today was the last day of the winter session that saw longest ever shutdown of Parliament by Opposition. According to the Congress spokesperson, Sonia Gandhi also congratulated the government for achieving 8.9% growth and also underlined the party’s principle to achieve “inclusive growth” and not forget the “aam aadami”.

Former Telecom Minister A.Raja was forced to resign from the post on November 14, for his alleged involvement in the 2G spectrum scam. As per the CAG Reports, A Raja sold the spectrum licenses to new players in 2008 at much low cost which resulted into the loss to ex-chequer.

Actors don't reinvent themselves: Bobby

Bobby Deol is unfazed by the recent bad luck at the box office as he looks forward to his next film Yamla, Pagla, Deewana, which reunites him with brother Sunny and father Dharmendra once again after Apne. The youngest of the Deols, Bobby, who debuted in a romantic role in Barsaat in 1995 and graduated in thrillers while experimenting with different genres, says when it comes to success at the box office everything boils down to 'luck'.
"I don't find Bollywood actors in their 40's reinventing themselves and I don't need any reinventing strategy to survive in the industry as ultimately it's all luck that ensures your box office success," Bobby told PTI. Post the success of Apne, Bobby will once again be seen sharing screen space with his father and brother Sunny in the upcoming film Yamla Pagla Deewana which celebrates the cine-legend Dharmendra's 50 years in the tinsel town.

However, the actor insists he is never under pressure when it comes to match the charisma and the emoting prowess of his father who is still going strong at 75. "I know being comfortable is a different thing and being professional on the sets is a different ball game. But we had a gala time during the shoot as my father is a warm person who has always made our lives comfortable.

"He is confident that his sons are good actors and getting advice from a legend like him is a blessing," said Bobby.'Yamla Pagla....', will witness the three Deols in a new avatar. It is a potboiler of comedy, drama, action and romance. The film opens in Vancouvre, travels to Banaras and eventually paves its way to Punjab.

"The idea suddenly propped in our mind as we were listening to papa's song from the film 'Pratigya' and we instantly decided to work on the film with the same title though it took one and a half years to pen down the script." With hits like 'Gupt', 'Soldier', 'Humraaz' and 'Dostana' to his credit, success has eluded Bobby for a long time whose last horror flick 'Help' sank without help at the box office.

But the actor laments that lack of good scripts in Bollywood."There is dearth of good scripts in Bollywood. I agree my last few films didn't fare well. Sometimes you like a particular script but it doesn't turn out the way you expect it to be and you are deprived of hits," he said. Speaking about his future plans, the 43-year-old actor whose forthcoming projects include 'Thank You' and 'Players', is not at all keen to switch gears to production and direction and wants to confine himself to acting.

With newcomer Kulraj Randhawa playing Bobby's love interest, the film is a hilarious take on mistaken identities. Father-son duo of Dharamendra and Bobby play conmen while Sunny is an NRI. The film also boasts of actors like Nafisa Ali, Anupam Kher, Johnny Lever, Puneet Issar and Mukul Dev. It is slated for January 14 release to mark the festive mood of Lohri.

She said the dastardly attack was thwarted by the valiant and the ever vigilant security forces guarding the Parliament complex. Terming Premier Wen Jiabao's visit to New Delhi as a "big event" in Sino-India relations, China today said it would address the contentious issues like stapled visas to residents of Jammu and Kashmir as well as India's bid for a permanent seat in the UN Security Council.

"We will not exclude the possibility of discussions on any issue. For the issues such as visas, I believe the working level staff will talk about it between our two countries," Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Hu Zhengyue, who briefed the media here about Wen's visit to India and Pakistan, said.

Indian officials had said that China has promised to come up with some solution to solve the issue amid reports that some residents of Jammu and Kashmir already started getting regular visas.

The defence exchanges were put on hold after top Indian General B S Jaswal was denied visa on the ground that he headed troops of Jammu and Kashmir, which China regards as "disputed territory".

Hu also said the proposed dam being built by China on Brahmpatura river in Tibet would not affect water availability to India and the down stream countries.
Asked whether the issue of India's bid for the permanent membership of UNSC would figure during Wen's visit in the light of US President Barrack Obama's announcement extending support for it, Hu said Wen would discuss it during talks with the Indian leaders.

"Our discussions will touch upon this matter. It is not for the first time it has come up in our discussions. Our two countries have exchanged views on many occasions and publicised documents. We have made our stand clear. We are happy to see India playing a bigger role in international arena including the United Nations," Hu said without specifying whether China would come out in support.

China view the three-day visit of Wen to New Delhi will be "big event in India-China relations", Hu said.

On the Brahmaputra dam issue, he said "China and India have had very good communications and this will not pose as any obstacle to the development of our relations and will not affect the life of people living in the downstream of the river," he said.

Parliament logjam led to waste of Rs 146Cr

The 2G spectrum scam may have caused a colossal loss to the national exchequer, but the standoff between the government and Opposition over it has resulted in the further wastage of over Rs 146 crore as the entire Winter session of Parliament was virtually washed out.
The Winter Session began on November 9 and since a day after it, the entire Opposition has been hell-bent on demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into 2G spectrum allocation, which is believed to have resulted in losses to the tune of Rs 1.74 lakh crore.
The government has, however, refused to yield to the demand, leading to a deadlock because of which Parliament was unable to function for more than 10 minutes per day on an average.
According to official figures, the total budget for Lok Sabha for the current fiscal year is Rs 347.65 crore while it is Rs 172.33 crore for the Rajya Sabha.
The Ministry for Parliamentary Affairs, responsible for the functioning of Parliament, also has a separate budget of Rs 7.47 crore, taking the combined allocation to Rs 527.45 crore.
This includes salaries and other allowances of MPs, Speaker and Deputy Speaker of both the Houses, the expenditure incurred for the member's foreign visits and meeting the expenses for foreign delegations visiting India.
In a year, Parliament meets thrice -- for the Budget, Monsoon and Winter session. As per the business schedule of both the Houses, there should be a total of 83 sittings this financial year -- 35 sittings during the Budget session and 24 each in the other two sessions.
This means, on average the government is spending Rs 6.35 crore per day to run the institution.
As the Winter session was adjourned sine die today, the 23rd consecutive working day also ended without transaction of any business. This makes it clear that Rs 146.05 crore were spent without Parliament transacting any substantive business like Question Hour, debates and other legislative business.
This earned the Winter session the dubious record of being washed out virtually in its entirety.
Parliament could function barely for a few hours during the 23 sittings which began on November 9, as the united Opposition forced adjournments almost everyday, within minutes of assembling.
The other times when Parliament witnessed such continuous protests were in 2001 and way back in 1987.
In 2001, there was a 17 day deadlock in Parliament over the Tehelka scam, while in 1987, it was the Bofors scandal that wasted 45 days of business in both Houses.

'Sino-India ties need special care'

Ahead of Premier Wen Jiabao's visit, China today said its relations with India were "very fragile" and needed special care and guidance from the government to the public to avoid a war of words.

"China-India relations are very fragile and very easy to be damaged and very difficult to repair. Therefore, they need special care in the information age," Chinese envoy to India Zhang Yan said at a conference here.

Observing that public perception was vital to the development of relations, he said efforts should be made on both sides to create an objective and friendly environment based on mutual trust to ensure that there is no wrong perception of each other.

"To achieve this, the government should provide guidance to the public to avoid a war of words," Zhang said at the conference on India-China relations organised by FICCI.

Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao, who was present at the conference, sought to assuage the feelings of the Chinese envoy, by telling him that India has a "very commonsensical" and "very rational" approach to China.

But at the same time, she highlighted the "vibrant and noisy nature" of democracy to which the Chinese were exposed in India.

"Often, our Chinese friends speak of a certain gulf in appreciation of each country vis-a-vis the other, especially when it comes to opinions of that are expressed in the media of the two countries," Rao said.

"Our Chinese friends are increasingly exposed to the vibrant, I would say, noisy nature of our democracy. The fact that many schools of thought contend, many opinions are expressed which are often at divergence with each other. But I would urge them to understand that there is a certain very commonsensical, very rational approach that we in India have to China," she said.

"We see you as our largest neighbour, we regard in a real sense and an absolute sense the importance of building bridges with China, understanding China better, creating more of a mutually beneficial relationship between the two countries," Rao said.

The Foreign Secretary said the betterment of relations with China was of great importance not only to the Indian leadership but also for the business and for the industry of both the countries.

Hurley confirms separation from Nayar

British actress Elizabeth Hurley has confirmed that she ended her marriage with Indian businessman Arun Nayar "months ago" amid allegations that she cheated on him with Australian cricketer Shane Warne. Her affair with Warne came to light after they were photographed kissing and embracing by a tabloid.
"Not a great day. For the record, my husband Arun & I separated a few months ago. Our close family & friends were aware of this (sic)," Hurley wrote on her twitter page without making any reference to her affair with Warne. The News of the World claimed to have a video and pictures of Hurley, 45 and Warne, 41, sharing a series of steamy clinches and claimed Hurley had spent two nights with the cricketer, who is infamous for his womanising ways.

Hurley, who has eight-year-old son Damion from a previous relationship, wed Nayar in an extravagant ceremony in India in 2007 and sold the pictures to magazines for millions. From the onset their marriage faced trouble. There were rumours last year that their marriage was in trouble which was denied by Hurley as she kept pretending that all was well in their three-year marriage with several public appearances together.

Hurley and Nayar, an Oxford graduate, met in 2002. Nayar struggled to divorce his first wife Italian model Valentina Pedroni, who accused the actress of "stealing" her husband, the Daily Mail reported. Hurley is still very close to her former boyfriend, actor Hugh Grant. They were one of the leading celebrity couples but ended their romance after Grant was arrested in 1995 with a prostitute.

While Warne ended his marriage with Simone, the mother of his children Brooke, 13, Jackson, 11 and Summer, 8, after a string of affairs. They divorced in 2007, but got back together in 2009 for a trial reunion, which did not work out.
