Movie Review: Band Baaja Baaraat

Rating: ** * 1/2

Band Baaja Baaraat is yet another attempt from the Yash Raj camp to promote new talent. But this one may stand apart from the earlier ones in that it will justify the earnest intent of the production house as it brings to the fore some really talented people. The movie marks the debut of director Maneesh Sharma and lead actor Ranveer Singh.

Bittu and Shruti get together to start a wedding planning company Shaadi Mubarak on the condition that they will never get romantically involved. While their work grows with every passing day, one night brings the two closer playing a deal breaker. In a state of dilemma and confusion they end up parting ways. But life and business will bring them back together with the realisation that each is incomplete without the other.

Band Baaja Baaraat has the typical Yash Raj colour and flavor to it. The movie’s biggest strength is its ability to embrace the local flavor and transcend to a very classy one with absolute seamlessness. Both Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh don the skin of their characters to perfection. It’s like they are playing themselves in the film. Whether it is Shruti’s local west Delhi touch or Bittu’s typical Saharanpuri accent and style, at no point does the viewer feel any effort or acting.

The film drags only in a few parts in between, but manages to keep us entertained. The music is fabulous and we enjoy each and every wedding that our planners conduct.

HDFC Bank hikes deposit, lending rates

Private sector HDFC Bank today joined the ranks of lenders like ICICI Bank and Punjab National Bank by hiking deposit and lending rates by up to 75 basis points.
The move by the second largest private sector lender will give better returns on fixed deposits, but will also make loans more expensive for existing customers.

The bank revised the rate of interest on domestic term deposits of various tenor upward by 25-75 basis points to tide over the tight liquidity situation in the market.

In addition, it hiked its Benchmark Prime Lending Rate (BPLR) by 25 basis points to 16.5 per cent per annum from 16.25 per cent with effect from today.

Interest on term deposits with a tenor of 3 years and 1 day to 5 years will now earn 8.25 per cent interest per annum, compared to 7.5 per cent earlier, following the 75 basis points hike, as per information available on HDFC Bank's website.

For fixed deposits with a tenor of 1 year and 1 day to 1 year and 15 days, the interest rate has been hiked to 7.5 per cent from 7 per cent, while deposits with a 1 year and 16 day maturity period will attract 7.75 per cent interest, following a 50 basis points increase.

The interest rate on term deposits of 2 years and 1 day to 2 years 15 days tenor goes up by 50 basis points to 7.75 per cent, while the rate of interest on fixed deposits of 6 months and 17 days to 9 months and 15 days maturity has been increased by 25 basis points to 6.5 per cent.

HDFC Bank had last revised its deposit rates upward two months ago on October 11.

SBI now offers a maximum interest rate of 8.75 per cent on deposits with a maturity period of 8-10 years, an increase of 100 basis points vis-a-vis the old rate. The highest rate
hike of 150 basis points will be for term deposits with a tenor of 46-90 days.

BJP slams Sibal for ordering 2G probe

BJP today slammed Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal for announcing a probe into the 2G spectrum allocation from 2001 at a time when Parliament is in session.

"The general practice is not to make any policy announcement outside the House when Parliament is in session," Senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi told reporters.

He said the manner in which Sibal made the announcement "is highly objectionable and may invite privilege".

He said BJP does not accept the probe and was not worried that it covers the tenure of the NDA regime.

Sibal had yesterday announced appointment of a one-man committee of retired Supreme Court Justice Shivaraj V Patil to probe the alleged irregularities in the allocation of 2G spectrum since 2001, a period involving the NDA regime.

EU, India close in on free trade deal

The European Union and India are nearing a wide-ranging free trade deal and hope to sign an agreement next year, the two sides said Friday.

The breakthrough was announced during a visit of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to EU headquarters in Brussels.

The deal has been four years in the making and could boost trade between the two by almost 30 percent. The deal would slash tariffs on products by 90 percent and make it easier for trade and investments to grow on both sides.

"Let us sign the deal in 2011," European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said after a meeting with Singh. After trade between the two doubled over the past seven years, "we should build on this momentum."

India was still very much a closed market two decades ago but has opened up to the world to become one of the biggest emerging economies, with annual growth rates sometimes reaching double digits.

EU trade and investment with India reached some euro39 billion ($52 billion) last year.

Outside the summit meeting, the Doctors Without Borders NGO protested possible plans in the deal that would make it tougher for developing nations to buy Indian generic AIDS medicine.

Industrial output rises 10.8 pc in October

Back in the double-digit growth after two months, the industrial output in October rose by 10.8 per cent on back of healthy performance of sectors such as automobile, electronic goods and power.
The industrial production, which crossed 15 per cent in July, dipped to 6.91 per cent in August and further to 4.4 per cent in September. It again entered the double-digit growth figure of 10.8 per cent in October, up from 10.1 per cent in the same month a year ago.
"The present growth rate of IIP (Index of Industrial Production) shows that revival of economic growth as started a year back is continuing", said Sripakash Jaiswal, Minister for Statistics and Programme Implementation.
The government attributed the rise in IIP to improved performance of the sectors such as ship building, power equipment and generators.
Besides, Jaiswal said high growth in production of consumer durable goods was mainly due to healthy growth in the production of passenger cars, motor cycles, scooters and mopeds, alarm time pieces and TV sales.
The IIP data reveals that manufacturing sector during October grew by 11.3 per cent and electricity generation by 8.8 per cent from 10.8 per cent and 4 per cent respectively in the corresponding month last year.
The growth rate of the mining sector, however, decelerated to 6.5 per cent during the month from 9.1 per cent on October 2009. The capital goods industry, according to data, recorded a growth of 22 per cent in October, up from 10.9 per cent during the same month a year ago.
During April-October, the industrial output showed an increase of 10.3 per cent, up from 6.9 per cent during the corresponding period last year.

Justice Sen denies charges in reply to RS

Justice Soumitra Sen of Calcutta High Court, who has been indicted by a judicial committee on an impeachment motion, has filed his reply to the Rajya Sabha, countering the charges against him.

In his reply submitted yesterday, Justice Sen is understood to have contended that he had done no wrong and there was no basis for the charges against him on the basis of which he was found guilty by the committee set up by Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari, sources said.

Ansari had set up the three-member committee headed by Supreme Court Judge B Sudarshan Reddy after 58 MPs moved an impeachment motion against Sen in March last year under the Judges Enquiry Act.

The report, which was tabled in the House on November 10, said the charges of "misappropriation of large sums of money" which Sen received in his capacity as receiver appointed by the High Court of Calcutta and misrepresenting facts with regard to it were "duly proved".

Sen was given time till yesterday to file his reply.

Rajya Sabha sources said that the Business Advisory Committee would fix a date for taking up the matter in the House. Sen will have a chance to defend his case in the House either personally or through his lawyer.

The committee has found the judge guilty of collecting Rs 33,22,800 from a purchaser of goods, keeping it in a savings bank account and misrepresenting facts to the High Court.
This is the second case in the history of the country in which Parliament has initiated proceedings for removal of a judge. The first involved Justice V Ramaswami.

For the impeachment proceedings to be carried out, the motion has to be passed by two-thirds majority in both Houses in the same session in which it is taken up.

With only a day left in the Winter session, the matter is expected to be taken for consideration in the Budget session.

Nobel ceremony goes ahead with empty chair

Clapping solemnly, dignitaries in Norway celebrated this year's Nobel Peace Prize winner, imprisoned Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo, with an empty chair.

Friday's ceremony was the first time in 74 years the prestigious $1.4 million award was not handed over, because Liu is serving an 11-year sentence in China on subversion charges for urging sweeping changes to Beijing's one-party communist political system.

China was infuriated when the 54-year-old literary critic won, describing the award as an attack on its political and legal system. Authorities have placed Liu's supporters, including his wife Liu Xia, under house arrest to prevent anyone from picking up his prize.

In Beijing, both CNN and BBC TV went black at 8 p.m. local time, exactly when the Oslo ceremony was taking place. Security outside Liu's apartment in Beijing was heavy and several dozen journalists were herded away by uniformed police to a cordoned-off area.

The last time a Nobel Peace Prize was not handed out was in 1936, when Adolf Hitler prevented German pacifist Carl von Ossietzky from accepting his award.

China has also pressured foreign diplomats to stay away from the Nobel ceremony. China and 17 other countries have declined to attend, including Russia, Pakistan, Iran, Venezuela and Cuba. At least 46 of the 65 countries with embassies in Oslo accepted invitations. Serbia, which previously said it would stay away, announced Thursday it would now attend.

Some 1,000 guests, including ambassadors, royalty and other VIPs took their seats in Oslo's modernist City Hall for the two-hour ceremony, among them U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and U.S. Ambassador Barry White. About 100 Chinese dissidents in exile and some activists from Hong Kong were also attending.

Chinese dissident Wan Yanhai, the only one on a list of 140 activists in China invited by Liu's wife to attend the ceremony, said the jubilation felt by many at Liu's honor will be tinged with sadness.

"I believe many people will cry, because everything he has done did not do any harm to the country and the people in the world. He just fulfilled his responsibility," Wan told The Associated Press. "But he suffered a lot of pain for his speeches, journals and advocacy of rights."

Wan managed to travel to Oslo because he fled to the United States in May after Chinese authorities increased their harassment of his AIDS advocacy group.

An empty chair for jailed Nobel laureate

When ambassadors, royalty and other VIPs take their seats in Oslo's modernist City Hall on Friday for the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony, there will be one chair left empty — for this year's winner.

Nobel laureate Liu Xiaobo, a democracy activist, is serving an 11-year prison sentence in China on subversion charges brought after he co-authored a bold call for sweeping changes to Beijing's one-party communist political system.

Chinese authorities have placed Liu's supporters, including his wife Liu Xia, under house arrest to prevent anyone from picking up his prize.

On Thursday, Chinese police surrounded Liu's house in Beijing. Officers guarded the entrance to the residential compound and checked the identities of all who entered. About a dozen journalists stood outside while officers patrolled inside the compound in central Beijing.

China was infuriated when the prestigious $1.4 million prize was awarded to the 54-year-old literary critic, describing it as an attack on its political and legal system.

Beijing has also pressured foreign diplomats to stay away from Friday's ceremony. China and 18 other countries have declined to attend, including Russia, Pakistan, Iran, Venezuela and Cuba. At least 45 of 65 embassies in Oslo have accepted invitations.

Nobel committee secretary Geir Lundestad said Liu will be represented "by an empty chair ... the strongest possible argument" for awarding it to him. It will be the first time the peace prize will not be handed out since 1936, when Adolf Hitler prevented German pacifist Carl von Ossietzky from accepting the award.

The prize can be collected only by the laureate or close family members. Cold War dissidents Andrei Sakharov of the Soviet Union and Lech Walesa of Poland were able to have their wives collect the prizes for them. Myanmar democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi's award was accepted by her 18-year-old son in 1991.

Among the 1,000 guests expected at the City Hall ceremony are House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and U.S. Ambassador Barry White. In addition, about 100 Chinese dissidents in exile and some activists from Hong Kong will attend.

A torchlight parade through the dark, wintry streets to the Grand Hotel will follow, with chosen guests dining at a banquet with Norwegian King Harald and Queen Sonja.

Lundestad said countries gave various reasons for not attending, but some were "obviously affected by China." He noted that two-thirds of embassies had accepted.

China Talks Tough

China warned that attending the ceremony would be seen as a sign of disrespect. "We hope those countries that have received the invitation can tell right from wrong, uphold justice," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said.

Nobel Peace Prize Committee chairman Thorbjoern Jagland urged China to consider political reforms, saying the committee's decision to award Liu the prize was also a message to Beijing that as a world power, China "should become used to being debated and criticized."

"This not a prize against China," Jagland said.

On Thursday, about 100 protesters chanting "Freedom to Liu! Freedom for China!" marched to the Chinese Embassy in Oslo and tried to deliver a petition with more than 100,000 signatures urging the dissident's release from prison.

"Liu should not be jailed for his words. It's against the Chinese Constitution," said demonstrator Renee Xia. "The Chinese government is violating its own constitution by criminalizing free speech."

The Norwegian-Chinese Association plans a pro-China rally outside the Norwegian Parliament during Friday's ceremony.

Several news websites, including the BBC's and Norwegian broadcaster NRK's, were blocked in China on Thursday, apparently to blot out any possible coverage of the ceremony. Some Nobel-related reports on CNN's website were also inaccessible.

Li Heping, a civil rights lawyer, said the government's harsh reaction to the prize was an eye-opener for the West.

"In the past, the West didn't have a consensus on China. But this affair, this Nobel prize, has created one because it is linked with the West's core values," said Li, who was disbarred after pursuing human rights cases.

The United States and prominent rights groups repeated calls for Liu's freedom.

China's "very public tantrum has generated even more critical attention inside and outside China and, ironically, emphasized the significance of Liu Xiaobo's message of respect for human rights," Salil Shetty, Amnesty International's secretary general, said Thursday.

US State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley reaffirmed U.S. support for the Nobel Peace Prize, telling reporters in Washington: "We urge China to uphold its international human rights obligations and to respect the fundamental freedoms and human rights of all Chinese citizens. And we continue to call for Mr. Liu's immediate release."

In a chaotic ceremony Thursday in Beijing, former Taiwanese Vice President Lien Chan was honored with the first Confucius Peace Prize — intended to put forth China's idea of peace.

Lien was absent and his aides seemed not to know anything about it. Instead, an unidentified, ponytailed girl accepted it on his behalf. Tan Changliu, chairman of the awards committee, said the new prize should not be linked with Liu.

Pak papers acknowledge WikiLeaks hoax

Leading Pakistani newspapers acknowledged on Friday they were hoaxed after publishing reports based on fake WikiLeaks cables that contain crude anti-Indian propaganda.

The reports, which featured prominently in several papers Thursday, cited alleged US diplomatic cables as confirming many right-wing Pakistani views and conspiracy theories about the country's archenemy India and the disputed Kashmir region.

Much of Pakistan's media toes a pro-military, anti-Indian line, which was reflected by the papers' extensive coverage of the fake memos.

The instigators of the hoax remain unclear, though the material appeared to have originated on a news website that features anti-Indian and pro-Pakistani articles.

The Express Tribune, which partners with the International Herald Tribune in Pakistan, said it "deeply regrets" publishing the story. Other papers acknowledged the reports were false.

Still, Jang, which had carried the fake WikiLeaks on its front page, made no mention of the affair Friday, while The Nation daily ran an editorial saying the hoax had exposed "India's true face."

The WikiLeaks disclosures have dominated Pakistani media since they appeared, with pundits highlighting elements that appear to confirm their stance on the country's military and political leaders, as well as the influence of America and other countries on Pakistan's internal affairs.

Beer surprise selection for Perth Test

Spin bowler Michael Beer was a surprise choice as Australian selectors cut Marcus North, Doug Bollinger and Xavier Doherty for the third Ashes test against England.

Beer, allrounder Steve Smith and opener Phil Hughes were named Friday in a 12-man squad for the Perth test starting Dec. 16. England leads the five-test series 1-0 after an innings win in Adelaide and a draw in Brisbane.

Pacemen Mitchell Johnson and Ben Hilfenhaus, who both missed selection in Australia's XI for Adelaide, have also been included.

Hughes was added in place of opening batsman Simon Katich, who will miss the rest of the Ashes series with a torn Achilles tendon.

Beer has taken just 16 first-class wickets at an average of 39.93 since making his Western Australia state debut two months ago.

"This is obviously disappointing for Marcus, who has played some outstanding test innings for Australia," national selection panel chairman Andrew Hilditch said in a statement. "But it was felt to be the right time to bring the exciting prospect Steve Smith into the test team.

Hilditch said Beer's knowledge of the WACA ground secured his inclusion.

"Michael is a left-arm orthodox spinner who has been very impressive at domestic level this year," he said. "He took wickets against England in the tour match earlier this summer and we expect he will bowl very well against the English on his home ground."

Bollinger's omission leaves Australia with a fast bowling quartet of Harris, Johnson, Hilfenhaus and Peter Siddle to chose from.

"Both Mitchell Johnson and Ben Hilfenhaus did not play in Adelaide but will be strongly considered for selection in the Perth test match where conditions will suit them," Hilditch said.

Australia Squad: Ricky Ponting (captain), Michael Clarke (vice captain), Shane Watson, Phil Hughes, Mike Hussey, Steve Smith, Brad Haddin, Michael Beer, Ryan Harris, Mitchell Johnson, Peter Siddle, Ben Hilfenhaus.

A suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden pick-up truck into a hospital being built by the minority Shia community at Hangu in northwest Pakistan today, killing 15 people and injuring 10 others.

The Hazara Hospital in Hangu Chowk collapsed following the blast and several persons were buried under the rubble, witnesses said.

Rescue workers and local residents pulled bodies and the injured out of debris.

Fifteen people were killed and 10 others injured in the attack, officials said. Several nearby buildings were damaged by the powerful blast.

Rescue efforts were hampered by the lack of heavy machinery and a power outage caused by the explosion.

Kohat Commissioner Khalid Khan said the bomber had targeted the hospital.

Hangu is located near Kohat, where a suicide bomber struck a crowded bus terminal on Wednesday, killing 19 people and injuring over 30 others.

Sources said the minority Shia community was also the target of Wednesday's attack.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack.

Hangu district has been declared "very sensitive" by intelligence agencies for the Islamic holy month of Muharram, which began on Wednesday.

Authorities have put in place strict security arrangements across Pakistan as sectarian and militant violence has occurred during the month in past years.

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani condemned today's attack in Hangu, describing it as a "brutal and inhuman act of militants".

He reiterated his government's resolve to fight the menace of terrorism and militancy till its eradication.

India's climate position 'nuanced': Ramesh

Under attack from opposition parties and NGOs back home, Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh today admitted to "nuancing" of the Indian position that it will not accept internationally legally binding emission cuts.

He said there has been no shifting of the goal post and that he stood by India's position that it will not accept internationally binding cuts "at this stage" because he does not know what are the conditions that accompany them.

He justified the nuancing of the Indian position in his speech yesterday in which he said that all countries must take on binding commitments under an appropriate legal form, saying it was done so that India is "not isolated".

"There is no shift in the position, only nuancing," he told PTI, pointing out that India was trying to find room for "maneuver" due to increasing pressure from developing nations. "We remain anchored in non-negotiable but we are expanding our options," he said.

The minister came under attack from opposition parties and NGOs in India which attacked him for taking unilateral stand, deviating from long held Indian position that it will not accept any internationally legally binding emission cuts. They also said he had exceeded the Parliamentary mandate.

"All I said was that all countries must take binding commitments in appropriate legal form. This does not mean that India is taking on a legally binding agreement at this stage. That's our position," Ramesh said.

"Negotiations is all about flexibility, negotiations is all about seeing what is happening and responding creatively. I think frankly, I have not changed the goal post, I have nuanced our position. Our positions remains let me say we will not accept a legally binding agreement at this stage," he told reporters.

"We are not the bad guys, that's very important for India not to be isolated in any of these international forums and we have larger stake in the world economy today that we had perhaps 25 years ago," the minister said.

The vague nature of his remarks has also divided NGOs and the media about whether he was referring to legally binding commitments or a legally binding agreement- although both are linked. "It is a matter of perception, they are entitled to their views but they are wrong," he said.

"I think India's national interest has been advanced and improved by coming across as proactive, which is important for a country as large as India," Ramesh said.

Pushing hardest for a legally binding treaty are small island nations, which are the most vulnerable to climate change. Countries in India's vicinity- Bangladesh, Maldives, Bhutan and Nepal- are also supporting a legally binding pact.

The United States, India and China are not in favor of accepting a legally binding agreement, which is supported by other developed countries, and several nations within the G77 including African nations and Least Developed Countries.

India's close allies on the climate change issue - Brazil and South Africa - are also in favor of a legally binding agreement, which is causing divisions within the BASIC group. Public opinion, however, remains divided on whether Ramesh "abandoned" India's position.

Raman Mehta from the Climate Action Network, South Asia, observed that Ramesh had not shifted from India's position. Facing pressure from other developing countries, Mehta noted that Ramesh had "tried to use language creatively but hadn't made a substantive shift."

The statement, he said, "is not such a bad thing" since it stems out of "pressure from developed countries but rather to accommodate developing countries." Chandra Bhushan from the Centre of Science and Environment, however, argued that Ramesh had indeed abandoned India's position.

"It removes the firewall between the developed and developing countries...it internationalizes India's domestic voluntary action," Bhushan said.

No Problem Movie Review: Not a Weekend Relaxation!!

Movie: No Problem

Director: Aneees Bazmee

Star Cast: Anil Kapoor, Sushmita Sen, Neetu Chandra, Suniel Shetty, Paresh Rawal, Akshaye Khanna

Music: Sajid Wajid, Pritam Chakraborty, Anand Raj Anand

Movie Story: The title of the Movie is ‘No Problem’, but the storyline goes just opposite to it because everyone in the film has a problem with someone else. Movie goes like this…Anil Kapoor is playing the role of a clumsy cop in the movie, who, is after two minor crooks (Sanjay Dutt and Akshaye Khanna). Suniel Shetty is playing the role of a gangster who makes the cop more confused. Sushmita Sen is playing the role of Anil’s wife who is schizophrenic. Predictably all characters are connected through some stolen diamonds and the movie is all about chaos created by all these characters in the film.

No Problem

Movie Review: Despite of the fact that the movie comprises of many big stars, the movie fails to impress. Aneees Bazmee was not able to do justification to the roles of stars. He failed to give them proper characterization and script. Even the silly, stupid acts and logic out of the window of the characters are unable to tickle the fun bones. Seems like, the director has treated the film too lightly. Even the dialogues are too dull for a comedy film.

Anil Kapoor’s and Sanjay Dutt’s performance remains under-utilized with Sushmita Sen trying her best to make schizophrenia funny. Kangana Ranaut’s attempts to change her image from disturbed girl to a comedy queen don’t seem to have an edge. However, she tried to add some glamor with dazzling clothes and fiercely blown lips in the movie.

The action scenes in the movie are excessively violent for a comedy. Even the music of the film (Sajid Wajid, Pritam, Anand Raj Anand) was not good enough to match the chartbuster flavour of the Singh is Kinng audio track.

Happy Xmas Greeting Wishes 2010 | Christmas Latest SMS Wishes 2010 | Xmas Latest Greetings Wishes

Xmas Latest Greetings Wishes

The December 25 date may have been selected by the church in Rome in the early 4th century. At this time, a church calendar was created and other holidays were also placed on solar dates: “It is cosmic symbolism…which inspired the Church leadership in Rome to elect the winter solstice, December 25, as the birthday of Christ, and the summer solstice as that of John the Baptist, supplemented by the equinoxes as their respective dates of conception. While they were aware that pagans called this day the ‘birthday’ of Sol Invictus, this did not concern them and it did not play any role in their choice of date for Christmas,” according to modern scholar S.E. Hijmans. Among countries with a strong Christian tradition, a variety of Christmas celebrations have developed that incorporate regional and local cultures. For many Christians, participating in a religious service plays an important part in the recognition of the season.

Pranab cautions on European crisis

The government today pegged the economic growth rate at a 'conservative' 8.75 per cent for this fiscal, and cautioned against contagion effects of the financial crisis in Europe which accounts for 36 per cent of India's exports.

Improvement in exports is essential to bring down current account deficit, which is pegged at 3 per cent of GDP or up to 56 billion dollars and is not sustainable for long term, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said at the annual general meeting of industry chamber Assocham.

Current account deficit (CAD) represents movement of money out of a country on net basis, barring capital flows.

CAD surged 3-fold to 13.7 billion dollars in the first quarter of this fiscal over the same period last year due to higher imports because of economic recovery and larger payments overseas for certain services.

"Current account deficit would be around 3 per cent of GDP and in absolute terms, perhaps around 55-56 billion dollars (this fiscal and) cannnot be maintained for a very long period of time," Mukherjee said.

"Therefore, recovery of exports is absolutely necessary and those are linked with global developments," he added.

Mukherjee said 36 per cent of India's exports go to Europe and if the sovereign debt crisis in Europe turns contagious and spreads, the country will not be able to immediately find new markets.

"Unless there is robust recovery in Europe, immediately we cannot shift our market and improve international trade scenario," Mukherjee said.

After engulfing Greece, Portugal and Spain, financial mess has unfolded in Ireland.

Mukherjee also highlighted the need to work together with other countries to build pressure against protectionist measures.
"We cannot live in cocoon, we cannot live simply by raising protectionist measures," he said.

The Finance Minister was, however, confident that the economy would grow by 8.75 per cent this fiscal, a conservative estimate given a healthy 8.9 per cent growth in the first half.
"I am a bit conservative so I would be happy if it is 8.75 per cent," he said.

This estimate is not only lower than what was witnessed in the first half, but also of the upper end of over 9 per cent forecast in Mid Year Analysis, tabled by the Finance Minister
himself.

Mukherjee said because of the stimulus, fiscal deficit widened to over 6.4 per cent last fiscal, but exuded confidence that it would be pruned to 5.5 per cent this fiscal, as is projected in the Budget.

Tougher EU bank tests could ease crisis

With its plan to take another close look at the health of banks, the European Union could make a big leap ahead in its response to the government debt crisis. But for the tests to be meaningful this time around, governments and regulators will have to swallow their pride and expose some of the region's hidden skeletons.

EU officials hope a second round of stress tests, planned for February, will do what the earlier ones couldn't: restore confidence in the region's banks by checking whether they have the financial cushion to withstand unexpected shocks.

"The problem of the European responses since the start of the year has been that they have always been slightly behind the curve," said Philip Whyte, a senior research fellow at the Centre for European Reform.

Credible stress tests now, followed by a swift recapitalization of banks shown to be vulnerable, could go a long way in taking costly uncertainty out of the markets.

European regulators first tested their banks in Sept. 2009, but the results were never published. Another round of tests, carried out this July, was made public but widely criticized for not being stringent enough.

The EU has now decided to give it another go, after months of turmoil in the government debt markets made it clear that investors are anxious to lift the lid on the interconnections between government debts and banks' health.

The bailout of Ireland and Greece, and worries about Portugal and Spain, have shown that the crisis that has rocked the European continent over the past year isn't only about overspending governments.

It is also about investors fearing what might be at the bottom of a downward spiral fed by highly indebted government, poorly capitalized banks and the cost of bailing them out.

Both Spain and Ireland until recently were model citizens when it came to sticking to the EU's debt and deficit rules, and even this year, Madrid's debts are estimated to stand at 64.4 percent of economic output, below those of Germany, the Netherlands and Austria — the region's fiscal conservatives.

But Ireland was forced to inject almost euro50 billion ($66 billion) into its ailing banks after the country's real-estate boom collapsed. Many economists are warning that something similar might happen in Spain, once the local savings banks, or cajas, are hit by the full impact of the drop in house prices.

But the link between governments and banks goes beyond the direct cost of bank bailouts.

Regulators must untangle a spider's web of potential risks, from banks' exposure to their own economies through loans and mortgages, to their holdings of government bonds of highly indebted countries and those of other banks that might be on the brink of collapse.

Pak media publish 'fake leaks' about India

Pakistani media has published fake WikiLeaks cables attacking India.

The  media says these are part of the real cables stolen from the US diplomatic network.

The fake cables purportedly quote American diplomats as saying that India's military generals are genocidal, and that New Delhi backs militants.

These fake cables claim that the Indian government is secretly allied with Hindu fundamentalists.

Other claims include the allegation that Indian spies are covertly supporting Islamist militants in Pakistan's tribal belt and Balochistan, and senior Indian generals as vain and egotistical.

British newspaper - The Guardian - slammed these Pakistani versions as inaccurate and dangerous, after an extensive search of the WikiLeaks database failed to locate any of the incendiary allegations.

The Guardian suggested that this was the first case of WikiLeaks being exploited for propaganda purposes.

Protests, cyber-skirmishes over WikiLeaks

Skirmishes raged across cyberspace between WikiLeaks supporters and the companies they accuse of trying to stifle the group, with websites on both sides of the battle line taken out of service or choked off by attacks.

The UN's top human rights official raised the alarm on Thursday over officials' and corporations' moves to cut off WikiLeaks' funding and starve it of server space — something she described as "potentially violating WikiLeaks' right to freedom of expression."

Navi Pillay also expressed surprise at the scale of the online attacks that have targeted major American financial players — in some cases denying access to their websites for hours at a time. "It's truly what media would call a cyber-war. It's just astonishing what is happening," Pillay told reporters in Geneva.

In the Netherlands, a 16-year-old boy suspected of being involved in digital attacks by Wikileaks supporters was arrested.

US Attorney General Eric Holder said the Justice Department was looking into cyber attacks on opponents of WikiLeaks and companies that have stopped doing business with it. Holder spoke at a news conference following a meeting with European Union law enforcement partners on cybersecurity, counterterrorism and data protection.

WikiLeaks has been under intense pressure since it began publishing some 250,000 secret US diplomatic cables, with attacks on its websites and threats against its founder, Julian Assange, who is now in a British jail fighting extradition to Sweden on sex crime allegations.

US officials say WikiLeaks' actions have thrown diplomacy into disarray, caused countries to curtail dealings with America and, in the case of an earlier release of classified military documents, put the lives of informants at risk.

While US allies have also criticized WikiLeaks, some world leaders have questioned the arrest of Assange.

Questions Galore

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, questioning the reliability of leaked US cables referring to his nation as undemocratic and corrupt, said the fact that Assange is in custody shows the West has its own problems with democracy. "Why was Mr. Assange hidden in prison?" Putin asked at a news conference. "Is this democracy?"

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said he was surprised by the lack of outcry against Assange's arrest.

"This WikiLeaks guy was arrested and I'm not seeing any protest for freedom of expression," Silva said Thursday in Brasilia. "There is nothing, nothing for freedom of expression and against the imprisonment of this guy who was doing better work than many of the ambassadors."

Many US-based Internet companies have cut their ties to WikiLeaks, including MasterCard Inc., Visa Inc., Amazon.com, PayPal Inc. and EveryDNS. Those moves have hurt WikiLeaks' ability to accept donations and support publishing efforts — and touched off a bout of Web-based warfare.

Retaliatory attacks — which WikiLeaks says it does not sanction — have been claimed by a loose-knit group of "hacktivists" who gather under the handle "Anonymous."

They are using a modified version of software generally used to conduct "stress testing" on websites, according to Paul Mutton, an analyst with the London-based company Netcraft, which is tracking the attacks.

The technique allows even unsophisticated supporters to participate in attacks because all they have to do is download the file, which is then remotely operated to send a stream of bogus page requests to target websites.

Mutton said the number of computers spewing out spam had jumped from 400 to 2,000 machines on Wednesday — relatively small numbers, he said, but still apparently enough to overwhelm MasterCard and Visa. "I've been surprised at how effective its been," he said. "You don't need huge numbers of people to carry out an attack like that."

The surprise was shared by Internet activist Gregg Housh, who is involved with Anonymous. "I was surprised Visa and MasterCard went down," he told The Associated Press.

Housh said the number of computers at Anonymous' disposal was rising rapidly, now about 3,000 strong. But he also said supporters were running out of anti-WikiLeaks targets.

"So far today, no one has stood up and said, 'Me next,'" he said, noting that some companies threatened by online action — such as Twitter and Amazon.com, were considered too powerful to bring down.

WikiLeaks supporters in Switzerland and Germany have threatened lawsuits against US financial companies who have cut their ties to the website, while judicial authorities in France have put the brakes on the French government's effort to purge WikiLeaks from the country's computer servers.

The Germany-based Wau Holland Foundation, which has described itself as WikiLeaks' main backer, on Thursday protested PayPal's decision to cut ties with WikiLeaks and said about euro10,000 ($13,000) in donations had been frozen.

The foundation rejected PayPal's allegation it was supporting illegal activity and said its lawyer had demanded that PayPal restore access to the account.

Suits against MasterCard, Visa

WikiLeaks' payment processor, DataCell ehf, said it was preparing to sue Visa and MasterCard over their refusal to process donations to WikiLeaks. DataCell CEO Andreas Fink said he would seek damages from the US credit card companies, saying "it is simply ridiculous to think WikiLeaks has done anything criminal."

Pillay said if WikiLeaks had broken the law "then this should be handled through the legal system and not through pressure and intimidation."

The flow of online support has also sparked some solidarity on the streets. One pro-WikiLeaks protest in Australia sent about 250 demonstrators into the streets of Brisbane, while in the central Pakistani city of Multan, dozens took to the streets to burn US and British flags to protest Assange's detention.

Organizer Tariq Naeemullah called for the Australian's immediate release. "The brave man was arrested because he was exposing the real face of the big powers," he said.

More pro-WikiLeaks protests are planned for Friday in Brisbane and Monday in London.

Negotiators cite progress at climate talks

Negotiators reported progress on Thursday at the UN climate conference, setting the stage for agreements on a support fund for poorer nations and other steps easing global warming's impact. But it appeared the complex talks might run overtime into the weekend.

Once again this year the annual negotiations under the UN climate treaty, scheduled to end Friday, won't produce an overarching, legally binding deal to slash emissions of carbon dioxide and other global warming gases. From the start, the talks focused instead on secondary areas, including setting up the "green fund" for developing countries.

But in that and in a half-dozen other areas, world environment ministers and other delegates were still haggling late Thursday over the wording of texts.

Veteran Brazilian climate envoy Luiz Figueiredo, helping lead a key section of the talks, nonetheless sounded a positive note, echoing the sentiment of other delegates. "We are engaging heavily with other parties. It is a good signal," he told reporters on Thursday evening. "Parties are talking, parties are negotiating on the most difficult issues, so I am very hopeful that we will get to a good outcome tomorrow."

But Akira Yamada of Japan, whose government's resistance to committing to future emissions cuts has slowed the talks, predicted later the conference might have to extend into Saturday.

Yamada did say he believed parties could reach agreement. The talks were difficult, he said, but "we are engaging in how we can find good wording which can accommodate not only Japan but other countries."

As some 15,000 delegates, environmentalists, business leaders, journalists and others met at this Caribbean resort, carbon dioxide and other global warming gases, byproducts of industry, vehicles and agriculture, continued to accumulate in the atmosphere, barely abated by modest emission reductions undertaken thus far.

Scientists say temperatures could rise by up to 6.4 degrees Celsius (11.5 degrees Fahrenheit) in this century without deeper cuts, leading to serious damage to coastlines, human health, agriculture and economies in general.

"We all will leave Cancun knowing very clearly that we have not very significantly changed the time window in which the world will be able to address climate change," Achim Steiner, the head of the UN Environment Program, told reporters.

Bolivia's President Evo Morales, addressing the full conference, cited families already being deprived of water because of warming and drought, and islanders facing the loss of homes from seas rising from global warming.

If governments shun strong, mandatory emissions reductions, "then we will be responsible for `ecocide,' which is equivalent to genocide because this would be an affront to mankind as a whole," the Bolivian leader said.

Copenhagen Failure

Last year's climate summit in Copenhagen, Denmark, was supposed to have produced a global pact under which richer nations, and possibly some poorer ones, would be required to rein in carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases emitted by industry, vehicles and agriculture.

That agreement would have succeeded the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, which mandated modest emissions reductions by developed nations that expire in 2012. Alone in the industrial world, the US rejected Kyoto, complaining that emerging economies, such as China and India, should also have taken on obligations.

The 2009 summit produced instead a "Copenhagen Accord" under which the US, China and more than 80 other nations made voluntary pledges to reduce emissions, or at least to limit their growth.

In a sign of the sensitivity of even voluntary pledges, the US and China were squabbling in Cancun over an effort to "anchor" them in a fresh UN document. The Chinese want separate listings to maintain a distinction between developing and developed countries, and the Americans want a single integrated list.

Japan, meanwhile, has resisted language that would commit it to a second period of Kyoto-style emissions reductions beyond 2012.

Yamada said the 37 industrialized countries that ratified Kyoto now account for only 27 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. It's time for others — the US and China included — to join in mandatory cutbacks, he said. "For an ultimate goal, we are aiming for a single legally binding instrument, in which all major emitters participate," the Japanese negotiator told reporters.

The European Union, meanwhile, joined with small island states and Costa Rica in proposing that parties commit to taking up a "legally binding instrument" at next year's climate conference in Durban, South Africa.

The US delegation also seeks detailed provisions for monitoring, reporting and verification, called "MRV," of how China and other developing nations are fulfilling their voluntary Copenhagen pledges. A leading environmentalist here accused American negotiators of blocking a decision on the green fund in "the kind of brinkmanship that costs lives."

"The United States continues to hold these important decisions hostage in an effort to get what they want on transparency and MRV. This is unacceptable," said Jeremy Hobbs, executive director of Oxfam International.

The green fund would help developing nations buy advanced clean-energy technology to reduce their own emissions, and to adapt to climate change, by building seawalls against rising seas, for example, and upgrading farming practices to compensate for shifting rain patterns. Under the Copenhagen Accord, richer nations promised to provide $100 billion a year for the fund by 2020.

Movie Review: No Problem

 Rating: * * *

Unlike directors such as Priyadarshan, Anees Bazmi is a filmmaker who has consistently proven his mettle in comedy with some great comedies like Hulchul, No Entry, Welcome and Singh is Kinng. He has returned to the box office this time with another comedy called No Problem which boasts of a stellar ensemble cast.

The first question we might all ask after watching the film is how did the four people responsible for the screenplay of the film, actually do it. There is no method to the madness in this film. Things keep happening one after another in no order whatsoever. But despite all the hotch potch and khichdi, the audiences remain hooked although not booked. The gags are occasionally funny but the real humour in the film comes from the characters, their crazy outbursts  and oddities. Whether it is Sushmita’s split personality, Paresh Rawal’s blow hot blow cold camaraderie with Yash and Raj or Shakti Kapoor’s weird behavior, all the character peculiarities add to the comic flavor of the film.

The movie has a little bit of Biwi No 1 and a little bit of Housefull although with the gorillas. But unlike the two films, the music of No Problem is abysmal. The film is long but the duration doesn’t hurt because of the pace of the film. One has got to be in a rather nerdy mood to enjoy this brainless film that entertains and shocks all the once. The makers got that the lack of substance in the film had to be compensated through something else and so good sets and picturesque locales are generously used to add the missing character.

All actors dole out great performances. My favourite however in this one would be Sushmita, who has a small role to which she does immense justice. Kangana looks hot in her skimpy clothes but her accent and pronounciation of words such as daddy as deddy, cancel as kencel and quality as kwelty end up revealing the contradiction in the clothes and the person. Paresh Rawal, Anil Kapoor, Shakti Kapoor and Akshay Khanna  are all good. The only person who seems to have overacted a tad bit is Suniel Shetty. Overall, Bazmi has done better work with his earlier films but if you are feeling really bored and don’t mind sitting through three hours for momentary laughs, No Problem could be your film.

FAA steps up checks on Boeing 757 jetliners worldwide

MK-BI204_CRACKS_D_20101209174221

Aviation regulators are poised to order stepped-up inspections of more than 600 Boeing Co. 757 jetliners worldwide, prompted by a recent in-flight incident that left roughly a one-foot hole in the fuselage of an American Airlines plane.

Impending safety directives by the Federal Aviation Administration, according to people familiar with the matter, are expected to cover certain older models of the widely used, twin-engine planes.

The FAA is drafting enhanced inspection mandates in the wake of the sudden rupture and rapid decompression that occurred Oct. 26 while the American jet was cruising at 31,000 feet en route from Miami to Boston.

Following his impressive performances in the 2007 Deodhar Trophy and the Inter-state domestic Twenty20 competition held in April 2007, Pathan was made a part of the Indian squad for the inaugural Twenty20 World Championship, held in South Africa in September 2007. He made his Twenty20 international debut in the final against Pakistan. He opened the batting for India in the match, and scored 15 runs in the process.

After a good domestic season in 2007/08, he was signed by the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League for USD 475,000 (INR 1.9 crore). In the 2008 IPL season, he scored 435 runs and took 8 wickets. Following his good showing in the IPL, he was selected for the Indian one-day team. After the IPL though he played all the games in the Kitply Cup and Asia Cup he got to bat only four times. He couldn’t perform very well with the bat and the ball in the Asia Cup and in the Kitply Cup and so he wasn’t selected for the Series.against Sri Lanka. He performed well in domestic circuit and impressed the selectors and was selected for the England ODI series in November. He scored a fifty off just 29 balls in the second ODI against England in Indore, on his 26th birthday.

Yusuf had made his One-Day International debut for India against Pakistan at Dhaka on 10 June 2008. He became a regular feature of the national One-Day International team, but has yet to make his test debut .

Even though Pathan could not repeat his first IPL performance in the second season, he was selected in the Indian team to play the 2009 ICC World Twenty20 championships in England. In the second of the Super 8 matches of India, he made an unbeaten 33 from 17 balls against England, despite his team losing the game and crashing out of the tournament before the semi-finals.

In late-2009, Pathan was dropped from the limited overs team after a series of unproductive performances and the allrounder’s position was taken over by Ravindra Jadeja.

In the final of the 2010 Duleep Trophy cricket tournament, Pathan scored a hundred in the first innings and a double hundred in the second and led his team West Zone to a three wicket win over South Zone. Pathan made 108 in the first innings and an unbeaten 210 from 190 balls in the second innings. This became a world record in cricket for the highest successful run chase in first class cricket history.

On 13 March 2010, Pathan scored a century off 37 balls, in an Indian Premier League match against Mumbai Indians. The innings also included record 11 consecutive hits to the boundary (6, 6, 6, 6, 4, 4, 6, 4, 4, 4, 4).

Chinnaswamy Stadium,Bangalore.,he was named match of the match. Yusuf Pathan hammered a career-best 123 not out off just 96 balls as India pulled off a thrilling five-wicket win in the fourth one-day international against New Zealand on 7th Dec, 2010 Tuesday. The all-rounder clubbed seven fours and seven sixes on the way to his maiden one-day century to help the hosts overhaul New Zealand’s challenging 315-7 with seven balls to spare at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.

At the awards distribution ceremony he stated that “this knock will boost my career”.[citation needed]. Indian captain Gautam Gambhir said “I have always said Pathan can finish games on his own, and that’s what he did today,” “I had never seen something like this before. But I knew till the time Pathan was there, we would win the game.”

New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori said “It was a great game of cricket,” “We were in the game, but Pathan was pretty amazing and took the game away from us.”
